Pre-race routine:

This is my 5th year doing triathlons, and this is my 5th time doing this race. I had always checked in my bike beforehand and then rode in with someone from BT and let the family come down later. This year we stayed about 5 miles away, so I kept my bike with me and rode in the next morning. This worked out great, as I got a nice bike warm up in and was able to get to the site early while the family slept in.
Event warmup:

Got to the sight and could see lightning to the north. Went about my business, got set up and decided to go for a run, but then it started raining. Found some cover until it passed. At this point, I didn't have time for a run, so I was going to swim. The only issue was they weren't letting anyone in the water b/c of lightning in the area.

This did not deter the race director at all. This was much like PP from 2008 and he was so optimistic and calm and was basically guaranteeing we would get the race in. And he willed it for us, as we got the swim and event in! Roads were wet, it was humid, and many of the later waves got fully downpoured on...but it was crazy they got it in.
Swim

  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not my best swim by any stretch. I wasn't a huge fan of the buoys on the left, but I latched on to a guy that was going good. Only issue is he couldn't site for crap. I made a poor decision to stay with him, but should have left him. It was also tougher this year going off in the 6th wave, instead of the 2nd. It was much more crowded and had to swim around a bunch of groups. As I got out of the water, Holly informed me that I was the third red cap out of the water.

Should have easily been in the 22s, and close to breaking that. Still 3rd out of water had me feeling OK about the situation at hand.

Comparison over the years:
2006: 25:30
2007: 22.26
2008: 23:05
2009: 22:34
2010: 23:05
What would you do differently?:

Find better feet or swim on my own.
Transition 1
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

This went extremely well. They made the transition area much more fair this year by revamping the ins and outs. Good decision on their part
What would you do differently?:

I was 1st in our AG in this portion of the triathlon. Good to get that right.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.09 mile/hr
Comments:

The road construction from the last couple of years finally was complete, so we got to do the full course again. I really like the full course up there. Very flat, with 2 or 3 overpasses being your only "climbs".

My bike was pretty uneventful. I was about 10W lower than I wanted to be, but was able to push. I only got passed by two guys (both in my AG), otherwise I was doing a ton of passing. It was fun to pass all the 35-39 year olds I never got to pass being in their AG.

Comparison over the years:
2006: 1:12:22, 20.6mph
2007: 1:09:26, 21.5mph
2008: 1:00:50, 23.1mph *
2009: 1:00:15, 23.2mph *
2010: 1:04:26, 23.1mph

* based on shorter course of ~23.2 miles was my guess

What would you do differently?:

More bike training. Need to get my FTP up, up, up!
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Lost some time here. Mental error, as I forgot to get my shoes out of the bag I put them in while it was raining. Plus, I couldn't get my bike racked b/c I got it stuck on someone's wet suit. Not huge, but the two toghether cost me about 10-15s.
What would you do differently?:

Prepare for adversity like rain.
Run
  • 41m 23s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good run for me. I was expecting to break 41, but my legs were not firing at all for the whole first mile. Came out of transition with quads burning, but my legs wouldn't go like I wanted. After the first mile, though, things were good.

I started out and must have made up some time on one of my AG peeps, as I passed him during mile 2. I started to feel good around 2.5 miles and got a nice pick me up as the family was there cheering me on. Shortly after that, I got passed by another person in the 40-44AG, so I decided to go for broke and hang with him. Only issue is that he was going at a 6:10-6:15 pace. I hung with him from 3.5-4 miles or within range, but then let him drop me. After the race, I wasn't happy with that decision. If you look at my splits, you can tell he somewhat deflated me, b/c my next mile was slow...and my HR dipped (that shouldn't happen!!!). But you live and learn. I was able to get out of my funk and push it the rest of the way.

I was being pushed by another guy the last mile and I really had to keep up my pace to keep him at bay. He kept closing, but I could hear him breathing (a good sign...if you only hear footsteps...its most likely over). The last .2 he really wanted to pass, but I wasn't having any of that. I went sub 5:40 for the last .2 and was on my toes the whole way. It hurt, but felt good. He gave me a nice slap on the bottom afterwards and was glad I was pushing. The fact that I had that much gas left, tells me I should have pushed harder earlier.

The only issue with that is my son was running with me for some of that stretch...in crocs! Now, he wasn't sustaining it, but it does tell me that he is dogging it on the baseball field every once in awhile b/c he showed some speed out there on Sunday!

My splits:

1m: 6:59, 146ahr, 149mhr
2m: 6:49, 152ahr, 154mhr
3m: 6:36, 156ahr, 160mhr
4m: 6:49, 155ahr, 157mhr
5m: 6:34, 158ahr, 161mhr
6m: 6:25, 161ahr, 165mhr
0.21: 5:36, 165ahr, 166mhr

Nutrition/hydration: a cup of water at every aid station, with the exception of 2 at mile 2 and a gel.

Comparison:
2006: 52:12 (8:24m/m)
2007: 45:12 (7:17m/m)
2008: 43:24 (6:59m/m)
2009: 42:46 (6:53m/m)
2010: 41:24 (6:39m/m)
What would you do differently?:

Get my run legs going early with some more bricks. And not let up in the middle.

Still a pretty good run, and nice improvement over the years.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Holly and the kids. Had some gatorade, talked with running2far about his podium in the sprint. That ran towards the car b/c it was raining and coming down harder and harder. Went to hotel, showered, packed and headed back to the race site after the storms passed through.

Watched as tripletmom, lrunfit, and others got their awards. Also, won a roadID in the raffle!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe a taper. poor swim. Not the best run execution. Minor things, and easily correctible, but they add up.

I had 5 goals coming into the race:
1) Go sub 2:10 on a true course, as my 2:08 was on a shortened bike - Nope
2) Go sub 22 in swim - nope
3) Go sub 41 in run - nope
4) Go 23mph+ on bike - Yes
5) Beat Lauren Jensen - YES - And that has been a goal of mine at this race for 4 years. I finally did it...and that makes up for the other missed goals ;)

Event comments:

This is one of the best Olympics in the midwest. The announcer/race director is great and the people embrace the race and athletes.
