Swim
Comments: Water was warm, but the air was cool. Wore a wetsuit for the first time. In general I am a decent swimmer, but I was able to really rock it out with the help of the wetsuit. Lot's of chaos during the swim. Started out in the front. The bouys could have been much BIGGER so we could see them. They were hard to see. Things were great up to the first turn. Upon the first turn we had to navigate all of the men who started before us. It slowed things down. Many were doing breaststroke or on their backs. What would you do differently?: The management needs to do more with the swim and setting up the waves so we are not running into each other. There were too many people in the way. There may need to be more than 3 minutes in between groups or really focus on having slower swimmers start later or individually (since that is an option with this race) Transition 1
Comments: T1 was great, about a minute better than last year. I was able to have my wet suit down to my waist before I got out of the water. It was very easy to take off, no stopping at the heels. Quickly got on my bike shoes, helmet and gloves. I did throw on a long sleeve tech shirt as it was cold out. What would you do differently?: Now I need to buy a wet suit instead of borrowing it...$$. I can't believe I have turned to the dark side :) Bike
Comments: I was very happy with my bike and time. Spent alot of time in the 3rd ring working the hills and downhills as much as I could. Drank a little water on the bike, but not too much. There were volunteers at all of the major intersections directing traffic and keeping the flow. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I feel I gave the bike all I could. Time wise I was 1 min and 30 seconds better than last year Transition 2
Comments: T2 was quick. Got the shoes off, running shoes on, visor on and race belt on and was off. I usually run with a Ipod, but went without this time. Glad I did. I find I mess around with it too much when I have it with me. Plus, I couldn't even tell you the songs I just heard. What would you do differently?: I fell right on the mat from t2 to the run. It was a quick slip and I was able to get up and going quite quickly. Things were still damp from all the rain the night before. Jammed my finger as it got real swollen during the run. Run
Comments: 9:33 minute miles, I was happy about that, but in the big picture, I need to get a RUN. If I could master the run, I could make this all work out. Run was good, took a while to feel my legs from the bike, but it was not as bad as I remembered it to be. I just focused on keeping my legs moving. Stopped quickly at the water stop on the way out, skipped it on the way back. What would you do differently?: Need to work on running speed. Recently had issues with my IT band and it took a while to recover. Given that, I am happy to be running and haven't worried much about speed or time. Suppose now is the time to try to ramp it up. Post race
Warm down: Kept walking around after I was finished. Did not sit down, just kept moving. Used the foam roller when I got home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing really, just need to master the run, if that is possible. Event comments: Good race, but keeps getting bigger and bigger each year. Not sure if they can accomodate any more people than the 800. Hoping they don't allow anymore and keep it where it is at. Trouble hearing the swim starter. You could not hear the wave or age groups being announced. Need to be much more louder. Again hoping they change up the swim somehow so people are not swimming over each other. Lots of great volunteers. Liked how they opened up the swim course to participants on the Thursday before the race so we could get in feel the course and try things out. Great idea. Up at 6 AM. Out the door by 6:30. Rode my bike to the park since we live only a mile away and parking is usually a mess. Nice easy ride. Carried everything in a backpack.
No warm up... let's get to it already!!
