Warm down: Rode out about a mile Event comments: Due to past disappointments years ago in what the Cornhusker State Games had to offer, I vowed to never do CSG again. I reaffirm my vow! Little things mean a lot: At most events, there is usually an ample amount of beverages--bottles of water or sport drink--available. Afterward, there were bagels and fruit, but when I asked about beverages, I was informed that there were a couple of coolers outside. I went outside, but there were no cups. I returned to the volunteers and asked about cups, but they had that "We're just volunteers" look. A woman asked another woman who seemed to be the head official (at this event and the one two weeks earlier) "Are there any cups?" The following ensued: Official: (looking at me, with a condescending tone) Don't you have a water bottle? Me: (somewhat taken aback by her tone) Well, I guess I'll go back to my truck to get one. Official: (childishly toward me) Awwwwwww. Me: It just seems logical that there would be a stack of cups. Official: Awwwwwww. Me: (beginning my exit) I will remember this. Official: (again) Awwwwww. Me: I will remember this. And I left. When I got home I asked my wife, "Do you remember when I said I'd never do the CSG again?" She replied, "Yes. Do you want me to remind you next year?" I have never experienced such a lack of respect or professionalism at an event in all my years of doing them--running, cycling, triathlons, etc. This was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back with my participation in the CSG. The quality of the support was already low—seemingly par for the course from past experiences—but this occurrence seemed to reiterate the “bush-league” system that I have come to believe the Cornhusker State Games to be.
