Swim
Comments: I feel pretty good about the swim considering it was the longest continuous swim I'd ever done, in a pool or in open water. I started to feel a bit tired coming into the last third of the swim but pushed through. What would you do differently?: Improve navigation. I love training in the pool, but training in open water would let me improve navigation and get used to swimming in choppier water. Transition 1
Comments: Dried off the feet, went sockless so just had to strap on the shoes, and grabbed my helmet. I already had my GU taped to the frame and water in the bike. I accidentally knocked the guy's helmet next to me off his bike, so I walked around and put it back where it was. What would you do differently?: I should eventually learn to do a running start with shoes already in the pedals, but for now I feel good about my T1. Bike
Comments: As expected, I got thoroughly dominated by the bike portion. This leg is the one I trained for the least, so I was only hoping to make it through, not to impress. I'm actually kind of happy with how I worked the gears and kept focus. Biking is definitely my weakness - I just need more time in the saddle. What would you do differently?: Train a LOT more, improve gear shifting, possibly consume another GU Transition 2
Comments: The one thing I did leading up to the race was practice slipping my shoes off while they're on the pedals and dismounting. I had a flawless dismount which definitely reduced my T2 time. I ran without socks and have drawstring shoelaces, so I just had to rack my bike, shove my feet in my shoes, and lose the helmet. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: This was the longest I'd run since the Tar Heel 10 miler a few months ago, so I was curious to see how I felt. Turns out, the run felt pretty good and I would have been exhausted regardless. I may have gone out slightly too fast, but I passed a good number of people and didn't walk. Water at every aid station (there could have been 1-2 more on the course) and willed my way to the end. What would you do differently?: Train a bit more in heat, wear a hat Post race
Warm down: Ate a few oranges, drank lots of water, sat in the lake for a while. There was a custom sub sandwich station available, but they only offered ham, so I skipped it and ate at home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of bike time Event comments: I'd definitely do this race again. Well organize, very good course, close to home. Last updated: 2010-06-08 12:00 AM

Stayed at my roommate's parent's house about 20 minutes from the site, so I didn't have to drive too far. Woke up around 6am, ate some oatmeal and a banana and was out the door. Got to the race site a bit later than I would have liked, but still had plenty of time to get set up and walk through transition entrances/exits.
