Swim
Comments: Really should have brought a wetsuit. Didn't anticipate them being allowed due to the water temperature. Rookie mistake I will not make again. I was in the 7th wave. Entering the water was easy and everything was very well marked. It was a little crowded but that was to be expected. I normally swim a little faster but it was hard to get into a really good groove. Moved out pretty well though. I was surprised at how long a run it was to the transition area. What would you do differently?: Bring the wetsuit that is hanging in my den. Transition 1
Comments: Not too bad. I moved as quickly as I could. Everything was soaking wet so it was pretty comical, me standing there trying to determine which pair of socks were the least soaked. I tried to choose quickly. What would you do differently?: Move faster. Bike
Comments: I barely drank one bottle of water. Affected me later in the run when my legs got all crampy. I also was really sore in the seat. I kept a good pace and didn't vary it too much. What would you do differently?: I would force myself to drink more water, I will probably try and get a better seat, and I need to check the calibration on my speedometer since it showed me moving out a little faster than my posted time. Transition 2
Comments: It was pretty slick at the finish, especially with the bike shoes. I slid around a little, and had to take short choppy steps. I moved a little quicker in this transistion. I forced down some water and I was on my way. What would you do differently?: I should have just ran in my bike shirt. I changed out a wet shirt for another wet shirt. Dawned on me as I was running through the gates. Gave me a little laugh though. Run
Comments: I didn't drink any water even though my legs were cramping something fierce in the first two miles. I tried Chi Running which I have been working on for the last 6 months due to all my knee surgeries. However I eventually just got frustrated with the slower pace and gutted it out running with longer leg extensions. My knees are paying the price now. What would you do differently?: Stick with the Chi running to save my knees. Post race
Warm down: Nothing. Grabbed some water, stretched a little and took the family to 5 guys. Figured I earned it. What limited your ability to perform faster: 4 knee surgeries and 1 shoulder surgery. I am waiting for total shoulder replacement. Not sure how that is going to work with respect to swimming. I trained this spring/summer but I did not push myself as hard as I could have. Next year I need to start earlier and get more miles in on the bike before the race and stay with the swimming longer into the summer. The pool I used shut down for the summer so I concentrated on running and biking. Event comments: This was my first race so I have nothing to compare it too. However it seemed very organized and well staffed. There was a slight delay to the start because of the rain but that was the only thing that slowed this race down. Last updated: 2010-06-10 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4am. Had a few cups of coffee, a small bowl of oatmeal, and an herbalife shake. Went to go out the door and saw that it was pouring down rain. I grabbed my rain jacket but it really made no difference. I drove to my buddy's house and picked him up around 5am. We drove downtown and parked near the Washington Monument. And then proceeded to walk over to the race start in the pouring rain.
Didn't do anything other than check out the swim start area, visit the porta-potti twice and laid my stuff out in a nice mud puddle that was right in front of my bike.
