Swim
Comments: About 200 yards into the swim I went to sight and took a breath of lake water. I just about drowned. This caused my to lose momentum and focus. Struggled to complete the swim. What would you do differently?: Not breathe while my mouth has water in it!!! Train more both in the pool and open water. Transition 1
Comments: Nothing to compare this transition to because this was my first race. I think I did ok but to be honest it was nice to be able to catch my breath while I was there. A little trouble getting my big feet out of the wetsuit. I just about fell over. Not a graceful sight. What would you do differently?: Practice my transitions before my next race. Bike
Comments: Just as I got to the turn around my chain fell off. This wasted a few minutes. The wet roads made me a little nervous on the downhills. My calves started to cramp around mile 10. Not sure if it was the cold or something else. What would you do differently?: Attck the hills a little more aggressively. I could have used some of the downhill momentum on the uphills. Transition 2
Comments: I forgot to take my feet out of my shoes before I got to the finish. I had to run with my shoes on across the muddy ground to my transition spot. What would you do differently?: Remove my shoes as I come in. Run
Comments: Ok this is where I almost gave up a second time. While putting on my socks and shoes my calves cramp up in the worst way. I could feel the two big knots in them. I basically ran the first .5 mile with my ankles locked so my foot was at a right angle. I never could really develope a stride because if I relaxed my ankle the calves would knot up again. I was in pain for about 2.75 miles. Luckily it was only a 3 mile run. Post race
Warm down: Strecthed out my calves the best I could. Walked around a lot. Playe dwith my son who was there to cheer me on. If it wasn't for him and my wife I don't know if I would have finished. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough time training was the biggest factor. The gulp of water, the chain falling off and the cramping muscles kept my performance from being better Event comments: Being my first race I can't compare this race to any others but I think the organizers and volunteers did a great job. I got up early 5:00 a.m. I couldn't really sleep the whole night. Like a kid a Christmas. Packed the car with my gear and bike. For breakfast I had oatmeal and scrambled eggs. I think I may have eaten too much though. Got to the race checked in and went directly to the transition area and set up. I need work on this. Not sure I had the best setup. Just walked around and soaked up the atmosphere. YOu only have one first race of your life.
I didn't warm up at all. Just a little lighth stretching. I will warm up for the next one though. I got cramps in my calves during the bike and almost couldn't run.
