Swim
Comments: Decided to go without the cycling jersey today - worried about chaffing. My new goggles fogged up a tiny bit by the end of the first lap so I took them off and rinsed them quickly - then they got water in them twice during the second lap. I felt pretty comfortable in the water, but not really as slow as my pace indicates... I do tend to swim to the extreme outside to avoid contact. What would you do differently?: No open water practice this year - except yesterday's race. Transition 1
Comments: Jersey got caught momentarily, but was able to get it on ok. There was a glut of athletes trying to exit T1 at the same time, but I ran by a bunch inside and outside the mount area. What would you do differently?: Possibly get a tri suit or sleeveless cycling jersey for these non-wetsuit legal races. Bike
Comments: Legs felt a little heavy from yesterday's race, but the ride went really well. During the rolling section of the course, a race official looked at me pretty closely as someone passed me then slowed slightly - I was trying to get out of his draft, and eventually had to sit up out of aero (and then I was passed by another rider) - no penalty assessed. Second best time on this course out of four races here. What would you do differently?: I've recently begun some hills training, and maybe I should have started a couple weeks earlier. Transition 2
Comments: I think this is the first time my T2 was faster than my T1! Got my socks on really quickly but didn't get my right shoe tied tightly - it came untied during the run. What would you do differently?: I may get some speed laces with my next pair of running shoes. Run
Comments: Started out surprisingly well, but had to keep slowing the pace to keep my calves in check. I probably should have eaten a Gu at 3.1 - I got a little hungry around a mile out from the finish. What would you do differently?: I need to run more - pretty obvious. Post race
Warm down: Did a little bit of stretching today. Got in a tub of cold water at home and dumped in some ice. What limited your ability to perform faster: At first, I'd say yesterday's Sprint, but I beat my last year's time by almost two minutes!! Faster in everything except lost 20 seconds on the run. Event comments: Water stations in the sun ran out of ice for the "back" part of the out and back. Ensure and Endurolyte - but forgot my Advil! Left the house a little early, but took my time driving there. Put the heater on to finish drying out my shoes from yesterday's brief shower during the bike. Ate a banana after the jog. Mouth's too dry for a Clif bar.
Set up quickly a took a brief jog, then to the water for a little swim.
