Swim
Comments: Still very nervous/excited I heard the instruction to swim clock-wise and still started off anti-clock-wise and hitting two oncoming swimmers; oops. I performed a false start which I'm not sure if I was penalised for or not - because I'm sure I swam faster than those starting with me and yet they got out of the pool before me; that is I think I had to do an extra lap. I found it very hard to concentrate on technique. One swimmer in the lane passed me then got in my way, but I didn't feel I had the strength to pass them without knocking into oncoming swimmers. By the way, I think this was my fastest 400metres to date. What would you do differently?: I won't be so nervous next time; so I'll following the instructions better, won't false start and just to make sure I'll count my own laps too, perhaps the kid-judges really can't count four swimmers at a time. Try to concentrate on technique. Transition 1
Comments: very leisuerly transition it was a cold wind, I didn't have the best clothing put shoes on before moving bike bike hooked on to transition area bar with handle bars but this made getting the bike out difficult computer fell off ion transition area, I stopped to put it back on What would you do differently?: purchase and use a trisuit, and a wind blocker full zipper jacket, glasses in pocket practise jumping on to bike with shoes attached to pedals but I don't think I can cope without socks... ensure computer is fitting properly find out if there is a rule about how to store the bike in transition, I am sure it would have been much better to have hooked the bike up by the seat Bike
Comments: angry when skinny woman passed me on her racer and I couldn't keep up What would you do differently?: I need to improve equipment, especially get a race bike so I can duck out of the wind Not try to eat gel on bike and grip the handle bars with open packet in my hand, the gel went everywhere. If I'm going to have water on this short route I need to get a straw for the bottle so as not to waste time fighting with the bottle cage and balancing with one hand one the handle bars. Also need a biscuit in an easy too access pocket, not on my back. Transition 2
Comments: didn't think about riding with feet on top of shoes nearly fell over trying to rack bike, really must findout how to do that right changing shoes at rack went really well grabbed a 500ml bottle of water What would you do differently?: practise riding with feet on top of shoes and jumping off moving bike Run
Comments: At the time I felt I could just about keep going without any real power in my strides. When later I found out, I am really pleased with my pace. What would you do differently?: if carrying a water bottle have any easier to carry type. perhaps I should have a belt that will carry a bottle. Power in my steps! Post race
Warm down: Guiness stroll around stalls shower stretch lower legs before getting in car to go home. What limited your ability to perform faster: training, experience, confidence Event comments: there were loads of volunteers there was great co-operation between volunteers and traffic police [and local council, I guess] making the road race very safe, which gave me a great boost in confidence. Massage was "available" but I was too embarrassed to ask if there was a cost [cost to be expected] I didn't bring any money for it; if I'd worked harder I imagine it would have been real useful. The volunteers gave a lot of oppurtunity for those that may have arrivec late to get in the race. Some good tri-related stalls, but I had no funds. Disappointing burger/hotdog stand, and it seemed expensive too. I went into town and found a cafe that sold jacket-potatos Last updated: 2006-01-21 12:00 AM

Course reconnaissance the day before
but couldn't find the run route
so that was going to be a blind run.
Also stayed at sister-in-law house, with retrospect may have been a bad idea, sleeping on an air-mattress for two nights, oh, and on the day before being dragged around clothes shops and eatting a big, big dinner.
Nervous about missing the start or having difficulty setting up transition I got there very early but did not consider doing any warm-up exercise; nerves were burning a lot of energy and my HR was raised anyway.
Simply, I kept myself warm with clothing.
