Swim
Comments: This was my very first open water swim, and I tried to swim it like I do in the pool, I was spent within 200 yards and was in survival swim mode for the remainder. I did not realize how much the wall helps in the pool. What would you do differently?: Train in the ocean, jeez, I work only 2 miles from the beach, I have no excuse. Transition 1
Comments: Long run to the transition point. I spent a lot of time rehearsing the transition and it payed off. The great thing about a first real triathlon is everything is a PR. What would you do differently?: Lose the dish tub to wash the sand off my feet. I did not even use it. Bike
Comments: After a lousy swim I must admit I was not completely unhappy with the bike. It went better than I thought it would. I did not think the bridges were that bad, but worrying about getting a penalty did hold me back a bit on the more crowded flatter portions of the course. The bike was my favorite part of the race. I did not drink near enough on the bike. What would you do differently?: Train more specific and drink more fluids. Transition 2
Comments: Again practice helped, based on the other T2 times I was a bit above average. I did run past my rack and have to go back so I need to mark the rack better. What would you do differently?: Mark rack better, and learn to jump off a moving bike. Run
Comments: I was very disappointed with my run time, but again this is the first time I put all three events together so I should not have expected better. Now I have a measuring stick to improve upon. What would you do differently?: Drink more on the bike to help with the run. Post race
Warm down: Water, Gatorade, and a cold towel. I walked around the parking lot for 10 minutes so I would not tighten up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Three weeks ago I started training for the Schools out Triathlon (same location)to be held on 25 July, but was told I had to deploy from 22 July to 4 August. so a buddy convinced me to do this instead (he did not show). The lack of training time and specificity of training especially on the swim combined with unrealistic expectations and lack of experience really hurt. Event comments: Since this was my first real race and I don't have a point of comparison I think it was awesome. Even though I thoroughly sucked, I can't wait to do it again so I already signed up for the Battle of Fort Desoto Triathlon in August. Maybe I can redeem myself. Woke up at 0315 drank a protein shake and ate a banana. and continued to hydrate. Left the house at 0345 and drove 1:15 to Sand Key. Was way early got my chip, got marked and set up. Was very nervous, This was my 2nd Triathlon (1st was 15 years ago) and was by myself so I watched how more experience racers were set up and adjusted my set up accordingly.
Slow jog for 10 min, and a easy swim to the turn buoy and back.
