Swim
Comments: Got kicked in the eye, snagged on sea weed, and generally bumped around at the start. NOT a good swim. Side-stroked, breast-stroked, back-stroked, floated, and even hung on a raft for a few seconds to get my breathing under control for the first 200m. Even once I settled in, I had trouble sighting, and got way off course at one point--fortunately a pal called me back in. Used a fast breast-stroking neighbor the last 100m as my "guide" to the finish line. (Thanks, ladies!) What would you do differently?: Practice a few laps prior to get my body in the swim rhythm. Start slower/further back. A few seconds to chill at the start would've helped me get into my pace easier. Also, when in doubt, veer left. Transition 1
Comments: Arrrgh! Missed my row, didn't run all the way from the swim, and too much dang dithering re: bike gloves or not!!!!! (Decided not.) The swim kinda threw me off my game. What would you do differently?: Run all the way from the swim and practice finding rack better. Out of the water get my head in the game!! Bike
Comments: This is where I can see getting the most improvement. Otherwise, very happy with my novice performance. Was tempted to push harder, but was able to save my legs for the run. Handled hills well, I thought. What would you do differently?: Need to ride more and get more comfy on the bike, esp cornering and getting water. Also a tune up next season. Concluded that a snazzy tri bike won't shave 15 minutes off my time--only practice will do that--but maintaining the bike I've got is KEY. Transition 2
Comments: Didn't fall! Got out of both clips without mishap. Ran/walked with bike to rack. Otherwise smooth. What would you do differently?: Run all the way to the rack. Run
Comments: Hey! I just ran my first [true] 5K EVER! 10-minute pace MUCH faster than I thought I could do, especially after the swim + bike. Used water to cool off arms--better than drinking it. Oddly, got hungry (briefly) at the start of the run. What would you do differently?: Re-work nutrition so I'm not hungry--maybe gels? Practice, practice, practice, and engage my mental "ipod". Less walking. :) Post race
Warm down: Got ice from med tent, then fruit. Rode (gently) to the car parking area (2 miles?). Swim @ Chris & Amy's pool afterward was awesome! Advil the next 12 hours--minor soreness in hips the day after. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental ability/self-knowledge, and comfort level on the bike, especially around corners. Event comments: Generally a good race--very positive energy. On the down side: Expo disorganized (poor signage, e.g.). Parking options poorly organized/inconvenient. Wish the post-race food had been IN the finish area and/or a larger finish area. (all minor). NOT MINOR: Cars IN the bike race lanes NOT COOL!!! Last updated: 2010-06-16 12:00 AM

7:32 start. Woke @ 4:15. Oatmeal @ 4:30, cheese, carrots, water, grapefruit soon after. Sunblock, dressed, walked dog. Kinda queasy from nerves. Got to parking ~5:20, got to transition ~5:35.
1-mile walk from parking with gear (bike was already racked). Transition was CROWDED, so I dumped my gear, used the portos, then came back to set up and inflate tires. Hard-boiled egg @ 6:15. Head not really in the game, sadly.
