Swim
Comments: Considering I've only swam 3 1/2 hours in all of 2010 (including the two tris I already did), I'm pretty happy with my swim. I was calm and stayed with my freestyle for most of the swim. After smacking head-on into a swimmer coming the other way during the North Country Tri, I've figured it can't get any worse and don't mind being in the pack anymore. And eventually they all pass me and I don't have to worry about it. My technique is terrible and I still can't swim a straight line. I went off-course 5 or 6 times. I still managed to take 2 minutes off last years swim time. I'll take it. What would you do differently?: Get someone in this town to build an indoor pool so I can train. Even an outdoor pool would be an improvement. There were way too many boats on the lake with this year's nice weather to be doing long swims without serious support from a couple of boats and that's just too hard to schedule. I'm not sure what to do differently. Transition 1
Comments: Getting better at getting my wetsuit off. Took some time to dry off so I wouldn't be cold on the bike. Bike
Comments: I took 20 minutes off last year's bike time, so I am really happy with my ride. In last year's race report I said I wanted to spend more time training on the bike and I did. It paid off. I could have pushed more on the hills and maybe cut the time even more, but I didn't want to kill myself before the run, since I'm nursing a knee injury and have a half-marathon next week. I will never be able to keep up with the people who have bikes with fancy extras like more than 10 speeds, clipless pedals and tires that fit in the racks in transition. My vintage Schwinn roadie needs to be replaced if I'm going to attempt a half-iron distance race next year. Besides, my training partner keeps mocking me... What would you do differently?: Nothing short of getting a new bike. Transition 2
Comments: Since I didn't have to change my shoes, transition could have been faster. It took me a bit to get my bike gloves off. Probably could have skipped them but my wrists are more comfortable with them on. Run
Comments: My right knee is messed up from the half-mary training and it is sore every time I run on it. It's never enough to make me stop, but it hurts enough to keep me from going all-out. Even all-out, I'm a pretty slow runner, so I wasn't expecting any miracles. My run time was 8 seconds longer than last year. Oh well. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to run without hurting my knee. Post race
Warm down: Eating pizza. What limited your ability to perform faster: My me-ness. Event comments: For the second year in a row I have to say that the volunteers make this my favorite race. Last updated: 2010-06-16 12:00 AM

Stayed in bed until the last possible minute. Had some GF zucchini bread with peanut butter and 4 slices of turkey bacon. Weird, I know, but that's what works. Then got in the car.
There was a good deal of jumping up and down to stay warm, then more jumping up and down trying to get into my wetsuit. I finally got myself together and jumped in the lake to swim for a few minutes.
