Swim
Comments: My decision to start out to the right was a good one as I was away from the pack at the start and was able to get into a good rhythm. As a rounded the first buoy however, it was a different story, man it was a nightmare. I got elbowed, kicked, bashed on the head, my goggles filled up with water and had to stop for a sec to fix them. After this bit of fun I quickly got going again and finished the swim without any further dramas. What would you do differently?: I'm glad I saw the current in the canal and was able to make an adjustment before the start of the swim because I'm sure it helped me put in a good swim time. I will be checking out wave starts before mine at future races a little closer from now on. Transition 1
Comments: I managed to run pass a few guys in T1 as they were jogging pretty slowly out of the water. I put on my helmet, grabbed my sunnies and bike and headed out on the ride. What would you do differently?: T1 went well and I had worked out my bike position fairly well, noting that there was a pink towel beside my bike which enabled me to get in and out of T1 pretty quickly. Bike
Comments: I really enjoyed the ride which is a first for this course. I normally struggle around Robina but I was able to latch onto a couple of packs and draft (highly illegal of course!!) with them for quite a while and really get up some speed (average 31km, this is a first for me). I also had a gel half way around the course which i think helped in the run leg. What would you do differently?: I think the longer rides I did over the Christmas break have really helped my cycling and I will need to keep this up if i want to maintain and improve my cycling performance. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went well and I racked my bike, took off my helmet and put on my shoes pretty quickly. What would you do differently?: Nothing really, it all went well. Run
Comments: I felt good starting the run leg and went out fairly relaxed as I knew by this stage that i was going to beat last years time easily. I drank some water at each station which made me feel good and in the end didn't need to use the spare gel I had on me. What would you do differently?: Overall I enjoyed the run and managed to complete the 2nd lap about 2 minutes faster then the first. I would have loved to have completed the run in under 25 minutes, but hey, what's another 12 seconds. Post race
Warm down: I felt very hungry after the race so I ate about 4 or 5 pieces of watermelon and 2 bananas in between a couple of cups of Gatorade. They also had some white peaches (who has white peaches at a tri, what a treat!!) so I had to have a couple of pieces as well and they were just divine. What limited your ability to perform faster: My times are still improving, which is great so if I keep up my training, I'll keep on improving. Event comments: I really enjoyed this race and I have made big improvements in all the 3 legs compared to this time last year (about 7 minutes improvement overall). I also achieved a short term goal by finishing in the top 50% of my age group for a longer race like this one. After the results from this race I'm starting to feel like I'm not a beginner anymore, but a real athlete competing in my age group. I realise that I have still a long way to go and heaps more to learn but I'm really enjoying my sport at the moment, I just love Tri's!!! Last updated: 2006-01-23 12:00 AM

I had been training over the Christmas break in between drinking and eating heaps so I was I bit unsure of my overall fitness and readiness for this race but I was still keen to go around. I drank heaps of water on the Saturday night before the race and I think this helped on the day as I didn't feel that thirsty during the race. About an hour before the race I had an energy bar.
I watched the elite guys start and as they swam I noticed they were all effected by a strong current trying to pull them to the left of the course (some guys almost missed the first turn buoy). I watched a couple of other waves start and they were also being pulled to the left. I decided that I would start out to the far right of the course and hopefully drift back with the current and not have to fight it like the other guys before me.
