Swim
Comments: Ugh- the swim is still my weak spot; had a great swim at Columbia this year but realize now it was because of the wetsuit. Water was 81 degrees so not wetsuit legal (unless you didn't want to qualify for any awards) and I am still just pretty weak in the water despite lots of time spent in swim clinics, at the pool, etc. Might be because I have cut back on swim training as I train for Duathlon Worlds in September, but this time was on par with my Oly times from last year; no faster even though I feel like I've become a more efficient swimmer this year. Despite the smaller wave than most tris I've done, I felt particularly crowded at the start for a good 200m, maybe more. I think I just started in crowded area even though I tried not to. Eventually got into a clear area and ended up passing lots of people with orange and yellow caps from waves ahead of me, but still a pretty disappointing performance compared to my bike and run. What would you do differently?: Start in a less crowded area; more swim clinics and time spent in the pool! Transition 1
Comments: STILL haven't had the guts to work on mounting with the shoes already on the bike. Need to just bite the bullet and work on this!! What would you do differently?: See above- learn how to get on the bike with shoes already on pedals. Bike
Comments: This was a pretty good ride for me. I passed lots of people and wasn't passed by anyone I didn't pass again, but of course I was still catching up from that disappointing swim! Didn't love the areas that were pitted or the stretch that was recently chip-paved, but those went by relatively quickly and with little to no road traffic and the bikes well spread out, I was able to ride around most of the uglier areas. Felt strong on the hills and had fun coming down the other side of them, although was wishing for even some small flat stretches!! What would you do differently?: Not much- really feel at this point that one of the best ways for me to get more speed on the bike is a better bike. I have been spending a lot of time on the trainer and on the roads this season training for World Duathlon championships so I feel like I have that part down pretty well. My bike is great and has served me really well but is an entry level road bike- I wonder what I could do on a higher level or TT bike but won't find out for many years until our kids are older, I go back to work and can afford one :) Transition 2
Comments: From the results looks like this was a pretty good transition time; our racks were all the way in the back towards the run start so we had to run with our bikes through almost all of transition, but this was a decent time. Still want to master the flying dismount leaving shoes on the bike but haven't made myself practice that yet. What would you do differently?: Force myself to learn the flying dismount. Tried it once after a training ride and almost fell off- just need to get the guts to try it again and practice it over and over. Run
Comments: What can I say- this is my strength. Had the 1st fastest run time among women, so definitely happy with that and felt strong the entire run. Passed a few people in my age group/wave so made up some of that lost time on the swim here. What would you do differently?: Nothing- just wish my swim was as competitive as my run time! Post race
Warm down: Took my stuff back to the car, changed and came back for some food and to wait to see results. Looked for the BT tent but didn't see it and wasn't sure if the unmarked tent was BTers and was too shy to ask. Excited to find out I placed 1st in AG and got a cool "bling-y" medal to show for it. What limited your ability to perform faster: Two words: THE SWIM. Event comments: Really liked this race- I did NJ State last year and find CGI events to be well-organized, great volunteers and race directors, and just an all-around great experience. I will definitely be back next year. Last updated: 2010-06-19 12:00 AM

Stayed at Hampton Inn in Elkton, which lost power at about 5:00 in the afternoon just as I arrived to check in and as I was literally waiting tog et into the elevator with my bike (thankfully didn't step in or I might have been stuck for a long time!) Turned out the power was out in the entire county so drove the 2-3 miles into Delaware to get dinner and some food, flash light and magazines at the grocery store. Figured it would be an early night, at least, but of course power went on at 8:00 just in time to get distracted by TV for an hour and a half before forcing myself to turn off the lights and get to sleep. Up at 4:45 a.m. to head to transition at 5:30- was up off and on anyway and figured I'd get a good spot on the rack as it was open racking based on a range of bib numbers per rack. I was there early enough to get the end spot on my rack, which was nice, although I then had over 2 hours before my wave was scheduled to go off. Ate a Marathon Bar, drank some water and gatorade and used the porta potties.
I tested out the water but didn't do a warm-up swim- it was chilly in the air (odd for this summer since it's been SO hot) and I didn't want to stand around wet for an hour before getting back into the water.
