Swim
Comments: I did better on the swim than I expected. I didn't have any trouble with the start, although I definitely got kick and shoved a few times. I certainly wasn't the fastest in my wave, but it seemed to split into two groups after a while and I found myself at the back of the first group, but way ahead of the second, so I had plenty of room to swim comfortably. It was a bit strange rounding the buoys, but I got it after the second one. That was one thing that I hadn't practised before, but it wasn't a big deal. What would you do differently?: Not much, maybe place myself further towards the front of the pack for the start, I got stuck behind some people for a while in the first ~200m. Transition 1
Comments: I did a good job setting up my transition area, I followed the advice of a couple of much more seasoned triathletes. I took a bit too long to take a drink, but I needed it... so I think I could do it quicker in future, but not bad for a first attempt. Bike
Comments: I enjoyed the bike and felt like I could compete with the more experienced athletes. I still haven't got the hang of bike shoes, so I was just riding in sneakers. Bike shoes would've definitely helped with the monster "double" hill, but I did OK without them otherwise. Overtook more people than passed me which was nice. Still about nervous about going fast down hills, but I've only had the bike 3 weeks and it was only my third long ride on it. What would you do differently?: Use bike shoes, get more confident with controlling the bike on fast downhills. Transition 2
Comments: Pleased with this transition, although I didn't have to change my shoes, so it was easier than it might've been. Run
Comments: The run was painful. I didn't hit my stride until after the second mile and by that point it was almost over. Managed to sprint the last 200 yds and came in strong. What would you do differently?: Do more run training and include more hill training before the race. Post race
Event comments: This was my first ever tri and I had a great time. I prepared by checking out the bike and run routes the day before and that really helped. I definitely finished much quicker than I expected... I thought I'd have trouble making it in under 2 hrs, but my swim and bike were both much faster than anticipated. Good time! Stayed in a hotel in Auburn the night before with my friend Lindsay. We hit teh sack early, ~9pm knowing that we would have to get up at 5am the next morning. Slept OK considering... strange + excitement + nerves!
Got up at 5am and started drinking lots of water, as I felt like I got dehydrated overnight because of the air con in our room. I had everything packed and set out the night before, so we just grabbed a coffee, checked out and went. Got to he parking lot with plenty of time, unloaded th ecar and rode out bikes to the transition area.
Ate a banana and half a Clif bar.
Spent 5-10 mins in the lake swimming a bit and just getting acclinmated to the water. Not too cold thankfully as I wasn't using a wetsuit.
