Total Time = 1h 13m 22s
Overall Rank = 60/367
Age Group = M16-39
Age Group Rank = 43/178
Pre-race routine:

Porridge for breakfast, gel & water 20mins before start
Event warmup:

swam in the warm up pool for 10mins
Swim
  • 13m 53s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 51s / 100 meters
Comments:

Poor performance.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Start of the bike was on an indoor running track with a sharp 90degree turn onto the main course, which crossed the runners path.
What would you do differently?:

get my mount sorted so I can run in bare feet
Bike
  • 35m 47s
  • 20 kms
  • 33.54 km/hr
Comments:

Poor bike, pace up the hill wasn't great and could have attached the chicane much harder. The course was very busy with a lot of inexperienced riders, which meant that I couldn't pick off people I was racing against and had to take some biuzzarre lines in the chicane to avoid mountain bikes.
What would you do differently?:

Pick a race with a longer lap. Mental preparation needs to be better, I wasn't attacking hard enough and I didn't work down the hills
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Nearly turned into the run finish instead of the bike finish, so lost some time there. The bike in was on the same indoor track as the bike out, after a sharp turn, so the dismount was easy as I wasn't carrying much speed into the line
Run
  • 21m 22s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 16s  min/km
Comments:

Given there was a hill in the course the MHR says it all - simply not working hard enough.

My race time is listed at 22 something, don't know wherte they got that from as I started my watch about 15s before I got to the timing point (unless that's including my transition)
What would you do differently?:

Work properly
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental preparation - I was training through the race, so no taper but that doesn't excuse the lamentable mental preparation on race day and the lack of work on the hills. MHR of 181 on a run course with 2 significant hills and a track finish simply says not working hard enough. (average heart rate for a marathon is higher than that)

Event comments:

Marshalls were very encouraging and helpful, but the entry & exit to transition is so convoluted, and the bike lap is so short, for 400 competitors it's verging on chaos.
