Swim
  • 20m 35s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

First open water swim. I've never really liked my wetsuit , I think its a bit too tight so it restricts my sholders & is incredibly hard to get off. This was my first open water swim of the year & the water was freezing, cant say the first 300m or so were enjoyable in any way. My goggles have lately been loosing their suction & it happened on this swim a load of times . Had to empty my goggles a few times & try & stick them back on again. Overall not a great swim but then again when you are as poor as swimmer as I am getting out of the water alive is always a big plus !
What would you do differently?:

Purchase new goggles . Pratice a bit in open water. Maybe try & get hold of a slightly larger wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

Actually though this took longer than it did. I had to fight hard with the wetsuit to get it off , I was a bit dizzy after the swim as well which didnt help. I am always slow enough getting out of transition as I dare not run in my cycling shoes as they are damb slippy.
What would you do differently?:

Similar to the swim above I could do with a slightly bigger wetsuit. My cycling shoes have 3 velcro straps so I dont think I would be able to leave them clipped to the bike & get my feet into them whilst cycling. May have to invest in shoes with 1 strap.
Bike
  • 46m 12s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Most of the cycle went pretty smoothly . The main drama was near the start however. There was a steepish hill at the start & I had great difficulty getting my second foot clipped in . I'd give a hard push with my right foot to get a bit of momentum & the left peddle kept flipping over so by the time I'd flip the left peddle over with my left foot I'd have lost all momentum so have to start again. When I finally did get going I was cycling close enough to the edge of a path by the side of the road. I went to press the lap button on my watch & because I was still a bit dizzy from the swim I swerved slightly , clipped the edge of the path & went flying into a ditch. Luckly it just resulted in some scrapes & thorns , but my hand was pretty badly bruised & hurt like hell on the tri-bars when I'd try to change gear with my opposite hand. It also knocked my front brakes slightly out of place so they were rubbing for the first mile or so . It took me until then to figure out what the rubbing noise was & why the first mile was so tough so I disconnected the front brakes . Hard to predict how much time all that cost me but must have been at least a minute.
What would you do differently?:

Not Fall ! Maybe not cycle so close to the edge of the path near the start.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

I normally dont unstrap my shoes before T2 so I am usually slow hobbling though transition on my cycling shoes so I slipped my feet from my cycling shoes for the first time ever here & was very happy I did so. Maybe wasted a few secs taking a drink in T2 which I could have done without but overall very happy with my transition. Still cant believe the amount of people that did T2 in < 50 secs.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not take dring in T2 & purchase lock lacers for my runners.
Run
  • 27m 19s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I havnt got in very much run training this year so my run has gone backwards big time , therefore I was expecting the worst for this run. I took it easy enough at the start in anticipation of the steep climb at .5k . I need'nt have bothered as I ended up walking the steep section anyway. Actually I ended up walking a good bit of the outward leg .I've never walked during the run section of a tri before so this was a bit humbling. At the half way mark I stretched out the legs & let gravity do its bit so I passed out a good few people on the way back.
What would you do differently?:

More run training needed , simple as that !
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

More training is always helpful. Some more swim lessons should help.

Event comments:

Very difficult for a Sprint race but lovely secenry throughout , there was'nt a cloud in the sky & there was a friendly atmosphere to the race. I'll be doing it again next year with hopefully more training under my belt.
