Total Time = 1h 16m 51s
Overall Rank = 76/272
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 9/25
Pre-race routine:

Peanut butter oatmeal for breakfast, some coffee. Took MA-Pike and 395 to get there - much easier and quicker than backroads for me from Medfield even though its 20M longer! Arrived a little after 7AM target then dawdled too much getting equipment out of the car. Relatively quick registration though and setup was easy - got a good spot. Much fewer entrants than 2009. Lines for bathrooms weren't bad.
Event warmup:

Jogged 1/4M to beach, got wet and swam a few strokes and by that time they were playing the star spangled banner. Probably should get there earlier, but I hate warmups and love sleep!
Swim
  • 11m 54s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

This definitely was shorter than 1/2 mile and shorter than same swim in 2009. Checking results repeat entrants were 1:30 - 3Mins quicker in 2010 swims. I swam it in 11:54 improving from 15:17, and though my swim was definitely much better (straighter! - new wetsuit that I love vs rental in 09) it couldn't have been that much better. Used to be in 50% of age and race ranks so definitely improving.
What would you do differently?:

More warmup time, trying to learn how to draft.
Transition 1
  • 04m 42s
Comments:

Struggled with my helmet and sat down to put on shoes and socks
What would you do differently?:

Practice helmet pre-race, do NOT sit down! Also need to get into toe-clips (I'm old school) better.
Bike
  • 37m 40s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike ride, beat prior year's time by 31 seconds. Had it in too high of a gear for first segment of big hill. This is a challenging course, but I tend to do well on hills. More training and I really could have shaved time.
What would you do differently?:

Considering this was only 2nd time biking outdoors (I spin 2 x week) very good results 30 seconds quicker than 2009. Just installed aero bars and couldn't use them as I wasn't comfortable at top speeds and biking at max effort. Should have drank more early in ride but didn't feel that I needed it. Then momentarily cramped at about mile 10, drank gatorade and recovered which is typical.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Pretty quick, but could be even a tad faster.
What would you do differently?:

Missed my area, maybe need a bright marker.
Run
  • 21m 49s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Was too full at beginning of run, then burped at half-way point. Was close to gassed then I saw my buddy coming the other way about .5M behind me and this encouraged me to keep going and push hard to end. Almost 1 minute slower than 2009, but ok with that as I was gassed, very tempted to walk but instead pushed hard last half.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little less at end of bike. Run more prior to race
Post race
Warm down:

Very winded/tired, pace for about 2 mins

What limited your ability to perform faster:

new baby born 4 days before race, 4.5hrs sleep both nights before

Event comments:

I really like this race for the swim and bike course and the plentiful parking on site is under-the-radar important. Well organized. Also very conducive to post-race tailgate. Shaved almost 5mins off 2009 time although say 1:30 attributable to shorter swim. I think participation was down for all age groupers except 40-55 males because it was father's day and us father's wanted to race!

Course: Very boring out and back. Only weak part of this otherwise great Triathlon. You bike alongside the runners for almost 1/2 mile which is mentally a bummer - seeing how long this is. From last year when it said I did 7min miles (close to my top speed for 5K)I know this run course is a bit short.
