Swim
Comments: I got out of water thinking I had done pretty good-however, my times don't reflect it. I really felt like I was working hard during the swim-I thought this meant I was going fast. NOT! I think I need to work on my speed when in OW and wearing wetsuit. What would you do differently?: I don't know. I felt good, resonably comfortable-goggles kept leaking, though, thought I was doing WAY better than previous swims. HOWEVER-I didn't have any panic moments and I keep my head in the game the whole swim, so that's GOOD! Transition 1
Comments: Chain came off-tried to upshift to get it on, but shoe got stuck in the ground and popped off 10 ft behind me. Fixed chain by hand, retrieved shoe, put shoe on and then mounted the way regular mortals do it. Didn't panic though and don't think it cost me much time. What would you do differently?: Don't know....why chain fell off. Maybe I bounced the bike too much during my run. Bike
Comments: Here is where my day started going downhill. I never, NEVER got comfortable on the bike. My handling was bad-I couldn't find a good cadence and my breathing was too hard the whole way. I made a small change to bike position earlier in the week and when the bike broke, didn't get to ride it as much. I'm changing back to the old position. may not be as 'aero'. but I'm more comfortable and maybe faster. What would you do differently?: I may have mixed the Heed to strong-I could start to feel it backing up in my gut. This changed the way I ate/drank during the run. This may have been my undoing later in the day. Transition 2
Comments: My transitions are what saved the day. I went so quickly I had to take a second to make sure I had everything-I did. What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: My gut felt full coming off the bike so I didn't eat a shot block coming out of T2. I was afraid to drink much cuz it kept backing up-so little sips of water were all I could manage. I could feel myself slowly running out of gas, but there was no way I could stomach any fuel. By second lap I was DONE. I've never really "bonked' til now. It's a helpless, bad feeling. My legs and brain all knew it was over, but you just keep trying to put one foot in front of the other and hope for the best. What would you do differently?: Heed too strong on bike-I've decided I don't need much nutrition during an Oly, so if I'm taking a Hammer Gel on bike, I don't need much else in my water. Post race
Warm down: Got to hear GF Julie and the kids holler for me-that is SOOO cool. You folks you have a strong support group are SO lucky. It does make a big difference. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat and rough cycling roads, but those effected everyone. Nutrition and hyderation caught up to me. Just one more valuable lesson learned in this complex sport. Event comments: This is still the race that I guage my seasons by. I like it, it suits me and I'll be back. Since we took all three kids, Julie and I got a wee bit of a late start, but made good time getting to Emmett, so it was a non-issue. Ate bowl of cereal and some fruit at home about 5:30 AM. Long, hot shower, positive thoughts and checked bike ONE MORE TIME to see if repairs will hold.
Handed kids off to Julie, did a quick jog around the park-needed to get good and winded since this always effects my race pace in the swim. Got into water and got nice and warm then settled into a spot near the shore-figured I could still make forward progress without getting into the crowds. It worked.
