Pre-race routine:

i raced a younger category today
woe up by 4AM and after some nutrients and getting the family ready and on the truck heded over to the race by 4:45 - we got there about 1hr later w/o traffic.
There I was relaxed and after getting my chip went on to meet some friends and head over to the start. Took one gel about 10 mins from my start. Tested the water and tried to get arms warmed up for the swim which already looked longer than I anticipated.
Event warmup:

Swam back and forth to the deep end (altho it was low tide) and then just moved arms like aors in same place after being instructed to stay out of the water and way.
Swim
  • 14m 57s
  • 1100 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

was able to just look for buoys after 3-5 strokes, meaning I did chase some feet and bubbles, however this causes me to look up and drag my feet.
What would you do differently?:

practice more my swim

45/60 on actual agegroup
Transition 1
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

this includes a long at least 1/4 mi run on loose sand from the beach and also long way to rack. Finding bike was easy and switching went smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Mark my rack,
Bike
  • 36m 22s
  • 12.6 miles
  • 20.79 mile/hr
Comments:

This bike went well, except for the first bridge right outside T1 which cought me too cold and still trying to catch my breath from T1. Bridge 2 was long but I feel I did better here, followed by ride thru neighborhood with some small hills and mostly flat. Passed a lot of people, some I can remember from last year. Onlast straightaway I pulled away as fast as I could getting on front of my bike and lowest gear.

Mile 1 at 9 mph pace at peak of bridge 1
Mile 4 at 7 mph pace at peak of bridge 2
Mile 9 at 12 mph pace at peak of bridge 3
Reached max speedof 38 mph after bridge 3, besides the bridges, I avg 23-24 mph on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

train more hill climbing/intervals

21/60 on actual agegroup
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

fast T1 - any extra time is from the actual rack location run back/forth
What would you do differently?:

realize that I should always enter my rack from the same side - opposite side does NOT add time, on the contrary
Run
  • 28m 10s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

gain 0.5 mi on loose sand which sucked bad, after that it got better. Felt invigorated when I crossed Javier at the same point as last yr, but this time we started the race at the same time. Mentally, things got tough at about 2.5 miles for the next 1/4 mi but once I was certain the finish line was there, I stepped it up.
Drinking my large fluids bottle on the bike certainly helped keeping cool here, and though bringing a water bottle for the run might have been nice, it was a nuissance more than assistant - there were plenty of water stations.
I can not complain about my speed, but I still ran in the botom 25% of the age group in which I raced
What would you do differently?:

1. no std sized water bottles - bring belt if necessary
2. practice running in sand/trails
3. intervals for speed.

37/60 on actual agegroup
Post race
Warm down:

tons of water, gatorade and cold towels

What limited your ability to perform faster:

focused training - need more speed training

Event comments:

very good race and well organized. post race amenities could be lots better, considering the food tent is competitor exclusive and this yr there were no medals, they could have done a lot better than pizza and rice and beans. That said, the organization was excellent - this is a race I would come back to.

On performance: one thing I still don't understand is how come my times were slower than 1 yr ago., yet my standings are much better (category: 09/10)
AG: 38 of 80 /27 of 60
OA: 337/254
Time: 1:20:25/1:25:19

T2 (+0:08)
