Swim
Comments: Totally sucked in the swim. Breathing was way, way off and stroke nonexistent. Did not swim since UBC Triathlon and it showed. Major bottlenecks in swim lanes and had to let lots of people pass me. Spent too much time resting at end of laps. Only had one good length where I relaxed and had some semblance of a stroke. Must spend more time in the water to improve technique and times. What would you do differently?: Practice! Still feeling uneasy in the water and so must learn to relax. Transition 1
Comments: T1 times included in swim. Felt exhausted exiting the water and seemed to take a long time getting socks on for bike segment. What would you do differently?: Practice! Could easily have taken 10 seconds off T1 time. Bike
Comments: Happy with bike times but would have been nice to average 30km/hr for this race which I believe is achievable. Should have spent more time on bike setup as brakes were rubbing a bit after putting on race wheels. Think I need to move my seat up a tad as well. Was pretty exhausted coming out of the water and took some time to settle down heart rate and settle into proper race pace. Had trouble on a couple of corners as not sure which direction to go. What would you do differently?: Should have pushed a little harder on this ride. Also should have hydrated more as I felt thirsty throughout most of the race. Transition 2
Comments: T2 times included in run segment. Average transition time. Racked bike ok, bike shoes off and running shoes on without any problems. Took a quick drink before heading out for the run. What would you do differently?: Practice! Run
Comments: Average run. Picked up a piece of glass in my right foot from pool to T1 which bothered me but worked through it. Breathing and heart rate were pretty high coming off bike so made a conscious effort to set an easy pace for the first kilometer. Started to feel piece of glass stuck in foot early on and slowed pace a bit. Rain started with about one kilometer to go which was refreshing. Most of the run spent thinking about my right foot instead of strategy, pacing etc. but was happy with my final time. What would you do differently?: Practice! Post race
Warm down: No warm down. Looed for water/food but didn't see any set up so went back to transition area to pick up my bike and gear before heading back to truck and back to Vancouver. The firefighters put on a bbq and have lots of food and drink for sale after the race with all proceeds going to a great cause. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor swim and glass stuck in foot. Definitely didn't bring my "A" game to this race. Legs may have been a bit sluggish from competing in Cypress Hill Climb competition the day prior. Event comments: This is a great first race for those wishing to get into the sport of triathlon.
