Comments: started at left side; took it easy and got stuck behind slower swimmers. First time swimming open water and did not know how to execute a pass. Kept running into the swimmers in front (3 of them). Was expecting swim time to be around 10 minutes conservatively, but 12:20 was absolutely horrible. Got kicked several times when people in front would switch to breast stroke. What would you do differently?: Start out quicker to prevent from getting stuck behind people as much as possible. Get more experience in open water swimming. Get comfortable swimming in close quarters. Learn to pass. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Not used to running barefoot on asphalt; jogged/walked instead; kept shoes off the bike since rack was furthest away from mount point. Put on shoes, then heart rate monitor, then shades, then helmet. What would you do differently?: practice running barefoot on asphalt to enable to run. keep shoes on bike and try to mount faster. Look into wearing HR monitor during the swim ![]() Bike
Comments: Pretty decent performance on the bike and I was quite happy. However, I did experiment and mounted my 808 rear wheel. 2 issues - #1 I forgot to move the sensor magnet over so my bike computer didn't register speed/distance (fortunately, my Garmin 305 was GPS-based and provided me good data) #2 my extra cassette is an 11-25 and my regular one is 11-23. I seem to be in between available gears in the big chain ring. Need to experiment and find right gearing for 23-24mph. Cadence was lower than I usually practice. Very tentative on turns and accelerations due to wet pavement/rain. Shoes felt loose and was moving when I tried to pedal the full circle. What would you do differently?: Mount sensor (buy and extra one for each rear wheel). Find right gearing for 23 mph at 92-95 cadence. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: got feet out of shoes in time. Didn't run though What would you do differently?: Learn faster dismount and run the bike to the rack. ![]() Run
Comments: Run was ok. Started off a bit too easy for first mile, especially 2nd half of 1st mile. Picked it up quite a bit for 2nd mile. Started kick about a minute from finish line What would you do differently?: Pick up pace better at 2nd half of first mile. ![]() Post race
Warm down: not much. walked around for a few minutes. slight stretching What limited your ability to perform faster: Better OWS experience. Easily lost 2 minutes not having any experience swimming with people. Also lost too much time in T1. Need to tighten cycling shoes better. Event comments: Well-organized race; my first triathlon so still getting a feel for it but I would do this race again and would definitely look for more races with Ironhead Productions! Had a Hammer Gel right before meeting at 7am. Swim start was 7:23am. Did not work out on Friday (complete rest); Folded race number and wore belt during swim.
Walked from car to transition; stretched a little bit.
