Swim
Comments: Crimeny. I tried to stay at the back of the pack, but there were still a lot of flailing legs out there. After the second buoy I deliberately went wide to avoid the scrum. I was having problems staying in a straight line, due to no recent open water swims. But I came out of the water feeling good. What would you do differently?: Work on having a good freestyle stroke and open water sighting. Transition 1
Comments: I struggled a bit with the wetsuit. There was no assistance for the sprint and my velcro in the back wouldn't let go. Other than that it was pretty smooth sailing. What would you do differently?: Become a contortionist so that I can reach the velcro in my upper back. Bike
Comments: A fairly flat course. They warned us ahead of time that a portion of the course was recently chip-sealed but it didn't bother me. The bike is my strongest stage and I cruised pretty well. I kept a good pace without getting overboard. What would you do differently?: Some charitable person should give me one of them fancy Cervelos or whatever that look like jet bikes. Some of the guys on the Olympic course came whizzing by me and they were moving like rockets. It's the shoes, man, it's the shoes - right? Transition 2
Comments: A quick shoe switch and off I went. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: OK, so my run stinks. I've been working on it but I had some weight to lose before I could really get going on the training and I didn't have time to get my run to a really strong level. You know, like being able to run a 5k. And I wasn't at my best after having done the swim and bike. So it was a run/walk. Emphasis on the walk. But I was able to mix in some running and I was happy with my "run" time and my overall time. What would you do differently?: Swap my body with Usain Bolt. Post race
Warm down: I met my wife and friend at the finish. I had a little fruit and some bean & cheese burrito. I chilled for a while greeting friends and then bailed back to town. What limited your ability to perform faster: I decided to do this race in April as motivation to lose some weight. I lost about 30 pounds and got some good training in. But I need to lose some more in order to get my times down. I will also benefit from additional training. The good news is that the combination of the weight loss and the success in the tri have encouraged me to keep on training. Maybe next year I can have a slow time in the Olympic race. Event comments: I thought the race was well organized. The busses to take people from T1 to T2 were running well, the course was well marked, and everything from my point of view ran smoothly. This was my first tri in four years, and I'd only done super sprints before. I woke up around 5:40, munched some food and got the gear in the car. I realized the car needed gas (oops) so I stopped and gassed it up but still got to Emmett in plenty of time. Since there were two separate transition areas and because they didn't want us to park by the bikes, it took a while to get set up but no problemo. I munched a cereal bar and tried to quell my butterflies. I said hello to some of my co-workers and other folks I know doing the race.
I got in the water and swam a little bit.
