Swim
Comments: Went out fast and got ahead of my wave. Had a great start through the first bouy. For some reason, lost rhythm and lost my control of breathing upon rounding the "inlet" portion, then took a solid kick to the rib from someone rounding the 3rd buoy. Didn't feel so good, and it took me a few strokes of breast to get things back in order. Had a moment of "why the hell am I doing this" and a moment of "it's a freakin' holiday weekend..aren't there better things to do" but after squeezing all the negative thoughts out, I finished as strong as I could. The last 1/3 of the race is a straight away, sighting toward the drain at the end of the lake. The water was low enough that you could see the drain from the other side, so there was no need to use the trees to navigate. Really started to get thirsty and was craving water. Was really too hot in the long sleeved suit. Hit it hard the last 200 yards. Stumbled a little getting out of the water. Really wanted to break 30 minutes. Minus the breaststroke issue and the negative energy after the start, it would’ve happened. What would you do differently?: Short-sleeved wetsuit. Turned on my arm turnover earlier in the race. Buoy'ed wider. Post race
Warm down: Hung out, hydrated, re-fuled, and rested for the 2 mile event 45 minutes later. What limited your ability to perform faster: Slow arm turnover. Poor navigation around 1/2 the buoys. Too hot int he longsleeves. Event comments: Great race support and volunteers. Food post-event included subs, chips, plenty of water and drinks. No in-water hydration. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Knew the wetsuit was going to take it out of me, but I wasn't going to trade in the bouyancy. Had a snack of a banana and some strawberry chomps and I was good to go.
Slid in the side of the lake left of the start. No one seemed to care and no one told me that I couldn't. Got a few hundred yards in before they pulled everyone out to start the first wave. Getting in to cool off (it was sunny, too hot almost for the long sleeve wetsuit) was what I needed!
