Swim
Comments: Great first 50 yards. Passed a few people with uneventful outcomes. Then the entire snake slowed. Poor seeding for some of the folks in the 70-80 numbers (I was 95). One father was "blocking" for his son, obviously seeded way too fast, and wouldn't let people pass. Didn't feel like I expended too much energy b/c I couldn't get going. Couple that with the touch the wall, touch the wall at each turn, there really was no momentum. This swim style favors the non-swimmers. No running out of the pool until you reach the outdoors...a good 15 or so yards. What would you do differently?: Seed myself faster. Transition 1
Comments: Great transition. Shoes clipped to bike. Remembered where my rack was (wahoo). Knew where the out and mount lines were. Knew the course, so was good at getting my feet in my shoes w/o freaking out. What would you do differently?: Work on mounts. Ran fast to the mount line...then had to come to a complete stop to get on the bike. Lost some momentum, but stayed safe (which I guess is the most important). Bike
Comments: Tight turns. Need to slow down. I probably slowed too much to err on the cautious side. I'm still not comfortable on cornering, as we don't do that too much in practice. What would you do differently?: Push harder, practice more cornering, have Garmin set to read mph 100% of the time to pay attention to my effort. Transition 2
Comments: Much better T2 than what I've had. Again, remembered where my rack was. Knew where the dismount line was. General attention to detail. Knew where to get out of my shoes (maybe did it a bit early, but would rather be out in time than not). Had no problem sliding into my running shoes (no socks/yanks/baby powder really helped). Put on hat and running belt as I was running out of transition. Declined water coming out of T2. What would you do differently?: Should've taken the water to at least pour on myself. Could've used that as a "go juice" to start the run. Wasn't thirsty, but was starting to get warm. Learn to do a flying dismount. Again, lost all momentum as I got off the bike. Run
Comments: Running is the worst of my 3 sports. Working on it, and working on the negative thinking (getting rid of it, that is). This was a much better run for me. Garmin tracked it at 2.4 miles vice the 2.6 or so as listed on the race registration. Mile 1 and 2, could've pushed harder, but didn't know the course and didn't know what was ahead of me. Last .4 was great. Felt good, but had some gas left in the tank at the finish. What would you do differently?: Push harder to have nothing left at the end. Need to work on strategy and overall race tempo. Post race
Warm down: Nada...cheered rest of team on, snacked, rehydrated. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not knowing the run course. Slower swimmers in the snake swim that caused log jams due to requirement that everyone touch each wall. Event comments: Overall, well-run event. Triitnow marked the course much better than other races this year (probably due to bikers going off-course earlier in the season). Nice facility. Fast and mostly flat route. Up at 4:30, out the door by 5:15. Car and bags packed the night before. Was at race site by 6:05. Snacked on the way up. Banana, lara bar, string cheese, and lots of water. One of the first to arrive. Snagged a great parking spot and went to check in.
Nothing really. Helped some of the gals on my rack and on my team set up their transition, walked around some.
