Pre-race routine:

Drove 60 minutes from house, arriving at around 6.45. Breakfast of cereal and banana. High blood sugar when I woke up, so corrected for that, but still didn't manage to get it down to normal before the race started. Plenty of time for getting transition set up - felt very much more relaxed now that I have a whole one triathlon's experience behind me!
Event warmup:

Ran a little, and swam for a few minutes just before they cleared everybody out of the water for the start.
Swim
  • 16m 52s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

My first half-mile swim in a race so I took it easy. Felt like I was going pretty well, but the results show otherwise. I guess when the different colored heads started going by, that should have been a clue. Previously, I have only been breathing on one side, but for some reason in my last practice and then in this race, I suddenly felt comfortable with bilateral breathing. I know you shouldn't normally change anything in a race, but it felt good, and I wasn't going round in circles like normal, so I kept going. A few crowds going round the first buoy, but plenty of room after that. An enjoyable and steady swim, but I feel I can go faster next time.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster, particularly in the first half of the race. Try to find somebody to draft off - that will help with sighting and may encourage me to keep up a faster pace.
Transition 1
  • 04m 50s
Comments:

I stashed some flip-flops for the run to the transition area, (thanks to BT reports) and was glad I did. That's a must do for this race - there's plenty of space to leave them and it's easy to find them. Need to get quicker on doing things at the same time. Tried to take my blood sugar but couldn't get my meter to work, so lost 30 seconds doing that (but I would really like to know what my blood sugar was going into the bike)
What would you do differently?:

Put shirt on first, then do helmet at same time as taking wetsuit off.
Bike
  • 41m 47s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Really nice course. One big hill, in several parts, which I was slow on, but the rest of the course is fast, with some nice curves and very fun to ride. Went out too fast, suffered up the hill and had little left at the end. Definitely feel I could do this course faster next time.
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself better, maybe ride the course first, work on hills more
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

I don't have bike shoes, so this is a really easy transition for me
Run
  • 26m 16s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Run is definitely shorter than 3 miles, as others have pointed out. My GPS gave 2.85 miles. My calves were on the edge of cramping for the whole run and so I didn't feel I could push it more, even though I had the strength and breathing to do so. Felt good at the end and had a kick to pass a couple of people in the last 200 yards. Run is a little blah, you don't really feel like you go anywhere, just out and back along a main road.
What would you do differently?:

Try to avoid cramping legs - get fitter, try salt tablets?
Post race
Warm down:

Lay down, tried to get my heart-rate below a zillion

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was hot, and I prefer cooler temps. General fitness and experience in the biking section

Event comments:

The vibe was okay. Not a huge field and I felt like there was a more experienced set of racers here than I had seen at other tris (or maybe I'm just looking for an excuse for my low age group rankings) Atmosphere was strangely flat after. But course is good - nice swim and interesting bike.
