Swim
Comments: We went off in 3 second intervals. Hit the water two dolphin dives and off. I immediately caught the guy in front of me. After about 100 meters I got passed by a guy. I immediately jumped on his feet. Followed him to the turn. After the turn I noticed he was swimming back down the out line. But on the return leg we were supposed to angle outward. I start trying to sight and I'm dead on with the sun. I can't see the "red umbrella". After 3 tries I finally see it and its folded in. I reach the beach, dive once then up and running. What would you do differently?: Have tinted goggles. Transition 1
Comments: Hit the beach and start sprinting. It's a pretty good run from the water to transition. Get to the bike and its belt on, helmet on, unrack bike and run. You have to cross over a long shallow ditch to get to the road and unfortunatly it rain the previous day. Anyways, flying mount, feet into shoes and hammer. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Quickly got into my shoes and started passing people. After the first mile it really thined out. I caught two more people between mile 3 and 4. One was on a road bike and he was sucking major wheel. I had to put in a hard effort and dropped him. Made it to the turn around in 7th place. Make the turn and I see trouble. There's a pack of guys flat out cheating. I caught another guy around mile 6 and another around mile 6.5. Wow I'm in the top five. It didn't last long. Around mile 7 I got caught by a group. Six to be exact. They weren't riding legit, but they were definitely faster than myself. Made the turn into the park and started getting out of my shoes. I had to weave around a few cars and yes I crossed the yellow line. Jumped off the bike. What would you do differently?: Notta, best sprint bike split yet. Transition 2
Comments: Ran down the small embankment and I tired to take the driest path across the ditch. Up the other embankment, took off my helmet and realized I had passed my spot. Turn around drop my helmet, rack my bike and the guy next to me looks with a puzzled look and says your "finished." As I'm slipping my shoes on I just let out a, "ummm yeah." Turn around and Run. What would you do differently?: Not miss my spot. Run
Comments: Head out of transition and I just can't get my cadence up. Hit the trails and I slip twice within 300 yards. The second time I almost wipped out. After that the trails were much more level and drier. I slowed down a bit as I close in on the guy in front, so I could put in a good surge and make sure I drop him. It works and he doesn't try to respond. I spend the next 3ish minutes just trying to pick up the pace, but nothing. Then I heard some foot steps and this dude just blows by me. All I can do is watch. I was by myself until maybe a .4 of a mile to the finish. When a guy start to catch me. He passes me with about 300 yards to go and I notice his bib number was lower than mine(TT start). So I just lock onto his back and follow him in to the finish. What would you do differently?: Not sure, I though I'd run in the 6:30s. I paced the bike well, so ??? Post race
Warm down: Grabbed a Gatorade and talked to some of the other finishers. Then found Amanda and waited for her mom to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not sure! Perfect weather, 80 degrees and overcast. Event comments: I'll do the race again, but its not the most organized race. Being in the top 15 or so racers, I really missed most of the race's issues. Woke up at 0445 and did the usual stuff. Ate Breakfast, peanut butter and jelly bagel, banana, and orange gatorade.
Pulling out the driveway, Amanda is going throught the prerace check list. Helmet check, shoes check, goggles check, race belt.... oh crap. Throw it in reverse, back into the driveway and run into the house. Can't find it anywhere, so Amanda grabs her belt. Problem solved.
On the road again. Arrive at Point Mallard around 0600 and transition is filling up quick. Jump out of the truck, unhook the bike, ride over to transition. I luck out and I was able to squeeze into the center rack.
Jog over to the iceplex, grab my packet. Then head back to transition to setup my spot and bike.
At 0630 I headed out for a 10 minute jog with a few pic ups. Went back to transition to put up my shoes and grab my goggles/cap. Apparently when I squeezed my bike into the rack, I pissed off the lady next to me. She was just a b!tching, I got here early to get a good spot.
I just calmly said "Miss they only have enough racks for 400 people and there are over 500 here(including relays)". Her response, " I don't have enough room for all my stuff!" Me, "it's not an Ironman."
As I walk to the swim start, I start thinking to myself, that chick is soo going to let the air out of my tires.
At the swim start I swam out to the last bouy and back. When I did this race in 08 that was the course. But not this year.
Got in line and waited for the start. And waited some more.
