Swim
Comments: WTF??? I knew it was bad when I noticed that I was close to the last one out of the pool even though I was one of the first ones in. Nothing was going right and it was a struggle the whole way. Good part is that my swimming can only get better from here...I hope! I mean, it can't get any worse, can it? Just one of those things where my body isn't listening to what my brain is telling it to do. Probably should have signed up for the duathlon, would have kicked butt in thatI bet. What would you do differently?: EVERYTHING!!! Transition 1
Comments: Not sure why, but I just seemed to take my sweet ass time in T1. Didn't feel too bad getting into transition after the swim fiasco and could have pressed but I just didn't. Took my time putting on my socks just as if I was at home getting ready to go to work. Funny thing was, I really just didn't seem to mind, just felt kinda "lazy" for some reason. Anyway, got my helmet and shoes on and "walked" to the bike mount line. Not sure how long it took from beginning to end but I would guess I was in transition for at least a minute and a bit. What would you do differently?: Get some damn motivation! Maybe next time I'll download a bunch of those Nike or Lance Armstrong commercials before heading out the door...Just gotta DO IT! Bike
Comments: Well, did pretty good on the bike leg. Felt better after passing some of those who blew past me in the pool. Doing over 50km/hr with the wind going south down NW Marine Dr. but had to work hard coming back against the headwind. Took about 5 kms before I actually warmed up on the bike and kept a fairly good pace throughout as I passed more people. One guy passed me at about 15k but couldn't get any distance ahead so I passed him about 200 m down the road. His passing me got me going so I picked up the pace a bit. Thought I saw the last of him until he came back up along side me about 1.5 kms from the end. I could see the grimace on his face as he giving it his all. We stayed together for a few meters as we flew down the course and we both congratulated each other on a fine dual. I put the hammer down and ended about 30-40 meters ahead of him to take the sprint finish. Kinda felt like Cavendish there for a second, lol. What would you do differently?: Hydrate more. Think I'll start looking for an alternative to the water bottle in a cage setup. Got kinda lazy on the parts with the headwind and could have picked it up a bit but, like I said, got kinda lazy. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went a little better than T1 but not by much. I was still a little gassed after the sprint to the bike finish. Got the bike shoes off ok and the running shoes on fairly fast. A little pause to take it all in, grab a sip from my water bottle and I was off on the run. What would you do differently?: Not be such a lazy ass, it's a race dammit! Run
Comments: Ok, never really had a problem with bricks until this race. Legs would not cooperate at all for the first 100 meters. My stride literally looked like I was taking baby steps...BECAUSE I WAS!!! Looking back, it probably had to do with how hard I pushed on the final stages of the bike leg. Anyway, my plan is to always start out slow and easy on the run and build up to race pace. No problems getting that done in this race as I was starting out slow, wether I wanted to or not. Usually takes me a few kilometers to warm up and get into a rhythm and this race was no different, only thing was that I just didn't pick it up enough. I realized how slow I was going at about the 3.5 km mark when I realized that, at this pace, I was going to have a ton of gas left in the tank at the end of the race. Felt all warm and fuzzy running at the pace I was and just never bothered to force myself into running faster. Probably that lazy thing popping up again, sigh... What would you do differently?: Need to have better "killer" instinct instead of "want to go home and crawl back into bed" instinct. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed an orange and banana and back to transition to get my bike. What limited your ability to perform faster: No mental preparation and poor swim dedication. Gotta hit the pool more often. Event comments: Not a bad little race. Very similar to UBC Triathlon except for the run course and transition location. I like the run course in the UBC Tri and this course is excellent as well. The trail run is a nice added touch. Things were just as well organized for this race as they were for the UBC Triathlon. Woke up, grabbed my stuff, loaded the bike and off to the race.
Absolutely nothing (could be a lesson to learn here).
