Swim
Comments: goggles filled up with water (twice) when I hit the water. had to stand up and fix that. water temp was a shock, took my breath away. Nailed Sighting today. Always knew where I was and where I was going. good swim, canal kind of slimy though. really dizzy coming out of water. probably need to invest in some yellow foam earplugs. What would you do differently?: warm up in the water before the event. test goggles at home (pair and a spare) the night before, not the week before. Transition 1
Comments: really dizzy coming out of water. had to sit down at bike for like 30-45 seconds to get my bearings. Clip in to bike was flawless, really happy I didn't struggle with that. didn't have my stuff laid out exactly like I wanted, ended up bringing too much stuff in. What would you do differently?: get feet adjusted to wearing bike shoes without socks. simplify what I bring to the race. Bike
Comments: did better than expected time wise for the distance. lower/mid back pain kept me out of aero after about mile 15. surprised to not see any water on the bike course. at least one station would have been nice. What would you do differently?: have T3 do a once over on bike before the race. bring more fluids/salt. Transition 2
Comments: had to rack elsewhere, my spot was occupied when I returned from the bike. also had to negotiate people traffic from those that were finished and walking around not paying attention to incoming traffic. What would you do differently?: be more verbal (loud) when coming into T2. Run
Comments: shins locked up in the first 300 yards - stop and stretched. had to start out run 2 min, walk 1 min - slowly worked that up to run 10 min, walk 1 min, then jogged in last 1.5 miles all the way through. lower/mid back really throbbing between mile 2-4. had to stop several times to stretch :( disappointed to see a lot of the police presence and course volunteers leave the course by 11:15am. Had to stop for road traffic a few times on the last couple of legs back. What would you do differently?: need more training time running. over-hydrated on the run, every other, or every 3rd gatorade/water station would have been enough. Post race
Warm down: leg drains, total body stretching, lots of fluids. What limited your ability to perform faster: *lack of training* (for the distances encountered.) poor nutrition the night before and the morning of. Bike not completely right, something has changed and I'm not sure what - need a re-fit. Event comments: Good first Oly. A long section of the bike course was rough enough to make me think twice about signing up for next year. If they can get that one figured out I would love to do this race again.
