Swim
Comments: There were eight minutes from the start of the previous wave until my start. I did some easy 25's to get a little loose, and then acted like a goofball for Jules and my Mom to snap some photos. The gun went off without a countdown and I quickly put the goggles over my peeps and took off. I choose to start far right opting for some calmer water instead of kicks and slaps to the head. I figured I could cut over after a few hundred yards but I was never able sight accordingly, and had to completely stop twice to resight. Eventaully, I got in a flow but still had to stop to clear the fog on the lenses. I was aiming for a 40 min swim and minus the long haul up the beach to T1 I was spot on. What would you do differently?: I'm a pool swimmer... I should have spent more time at the Huntingon Reservoir. Transition 1
Comments: I thought I would have spent more time in T1, but I was in and out in a relatively short time. What would you do differently?: Nada Bike
Comments: Ate a Cliff Bar straight away and then put the hammer down from the start... I just kinda got caught up in passing people but then realized I was on a course for disaster. I settled down, got comfortable, and steadied my breathing and cadence. Around mile 25, I started to relax even more and just thought... this is supposed to be fun... have fun. I gave props to the folks with road bikes and in a humerous way "called out" those who were drafting. I went 4 for 8 on grabbing water bottles and cracked a joke whenever or to whoever possible. The GU's taped to my bike didn't sit well in my stomach so I only had a half... would this hurt me later??? What would you do differently?: Ride more in a Tri suit... my butt was in a bit of a bother the last 15 miles. Transition 2
Comments: Mom, Jules, and Big Dave gave me a big boost heading into the run... Posters about fartleks are just funny! What would you do differently?: Nada Run
Comments: Started out fine for the first four miles. I walked through aid stations, and started to view the race as 13 "one" mile races. This worked fine until mile six when I got an attack of the bubble guts and had to pee. After the pit stop, I couldn't get it going again. The only thing really working was the butt trumpet and that didn't propel me any further or faster. The last half was a lot of trot/walk, until Jules picked me up with 500M.. she brought me home... in pain, but she still had my back! What would you do differently?: Longer bricks, more runs in the heat! Post race
Warm down: Tried not to lose my cookies, got my prize and had a frozen lemonade. Talked to Jules, Mom and Big D... just kinda sat on a bench for 30 minutes. Who really warms down? I'm average "Rob" not some race junkie who needs a warm down... What limited your ability to perform faster: Real life! I have a demanding job, a great girlfriend, and a tendancy to socialize with strong libations. I prefer that... damn being the best at exercising! Event comments: I'll see this race again in five years... older and wiser! Last updated: 2010-07-11 12:00 AM

The night before I drove down to Fishers to stay with Mother. Woke up at 3:00am. For breakfast, I had two slices of peanut butter toast and a cup of coffee. Jumped into the Dakota and drove an hour to the race site. I arrived at the race site at 5:00am...way too early given that there were assigned spaces on the bike racks. Had I known this another hour of sleep would have been had, but thanks to the mix cd from Jules I was already pumped and didn't care about the lost hour.
I set up my transition, taped GU and Cliff bars to my bike, walked down to the swim start to spot my exit and see just how far 1.2 miles is in water. Lost my timing chip, or should I say misplaced in my truck, and cursed myself for not strapping it to me ankle first thing. No real warm up just walked around checking stuff out. Mom and Jules arrived around 6:45ish took some pics and debated about the wet-suit.... I decided in the end to go without.
