Swim
Comments: It was a warm day, and the Hudson seemed pretty warm, so I wasn't sure about wearing a wetsuit. Not a USAT event so no water temp or wetsuit cutoff. Looked like most people were putting on a wetsuit, so I wore mine. Swim was good, felt strong and navigated well. I think the swim was longer than stated. I am usually 1:40 - 1:50/100 in a race, and everyone's time seems slow. What would you do differently?: Maybe not wear wetsuit. Transition 1
Comments: Got to my rack and really felt off. My breathing was out of control, and while I don't use HRM, I felt like my HR was way high. Also felt nauseous, and I had to stand there for a little bit. I checked the internet today, and the water was probably around 80, so I think I just got way overheated which is something I don't do well with at all. Bike
Comments: Leaving transition you climb about 125 ft. in the first half mile or so, and I didn't climb it as well as I would like to since my breathing was still way out of control. Once you get out to the main road you go back down an equally big hill, so I took the opportunity to coast a little and get myself back together. By the time I got to the next climb I was feeling good and managed to pass some people on the next steep hill. Second lap went really well. I was feeling so good I would have liked to do another lap or two. NYTRI's races aren't super fancy, but they are very well run, and they always have excellent traffic control on the bike course which lets you concentrate fully on your race. What would you do differently?: Could have climbed a little more aggressively, and passed more on the climbs. Transition 2
Comments: Went to the wrong rack at first. D'oh!!! Run
Comments: This was a tough run. Warm, humid, no breeze and some pretty good hills. After the first hill I got into a pretty good groove. Saw xrodolfox heading the opposite way well on his way to the finish. He looked strong and gave me a little shout out which was a nice pick me up. Saw a couple guys a few hundred feet ahead that I thought I could catch. I was able to pass them on the second big climb which felt great! Also got passed by a few people which wasn't so great. Grabbed a couple of cups of water at each aid station and poured one over my head which felt like heaven. Passed another guy going up the hill just before the entrance back into the park. Then on the very steep downhill back to the river I heard footsteps behind me. Didn't want to get passed back, so I did my best to run hard the whole way down and then had a pretty good sprint to the finish. What would you do differently?: Not much. This was a solid run for me. 9:27/mile seems kinda slow, but I was right in the middle of the pack which is very good for me. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and drank a lot of water. xrodolfo won his AG. Very cool! He is wicked fast, especially on the swim. Compared to a few years ago, I was about 5 or 6 minutes faster overall, which is not that great an improvement. I think it is due to a slightly longer swim, bad T1, and hot run. My overall placing was a big improvement: Last time I was around the front of the bottom third, this time I was around the front of the middle third, so I think that is a nice improvement. What limited your ability to perform faster: Don't train enough. Overheated on the swim. Event comments: Very nice, low key, local race. I look forward to doing it again. Only about an hour from home and an 8 o'clock start, so it was nice not having to leave until 6 o'clock. Usual shake a couple hours before start.
Was able to say hi to bt'er xrodolfox before the start. Always good to meet another bt person.
Did this race back in my first season in 2006 so I was interested to see how I have improved.
About a half mile of easy running.
