Pre-race routine:

Woke up at the hotel and ate oatmeal and my milk. Drove to the race sight and got there right as transition was opening - good front row parking spot. Ate my banana as I set up my transition area.
Event warmup:

17 minute warm up on the bike course with some spurts of higher intensity, then a 10 minute run warm up - same deal. Got my wetsuit on and got in the water - just time for a few strokes - they kicked me out of the water. But I was glad I at least got in.

Comments:

Not sure how to really judge myself here. While I was swimming, I really felt like I was pushing it hard. I made contact with people throughout the entire length of the swim and really felt like I fought for my position. My breathing was every 2 because I was working harder than I normally do and was much more aggressive than I usually am. I feel like the conditions were challenging - my first ocean swim and I really hated getting mouth fulls of the salt water. My siting was very good - I was right on top of the buoys which was fun as we rounded the last buoy on the way back to shore as I got into it with a couple of folks. I also think I might have sunk someone who'd decided to to the swim using her backstroke the entire way. I felt good about the swim exiting the water - thinking I'd really tried to push though - knowing that I was new to ocean water swims and waves - but still thought my time would have been better. Gliding was near to non-existent - couldn't seem to relax into that as I was bumping folks the entire time.
What would you do differently?:

More ocean experience certainly might have helped. Honestly not sure if staying in the thick of things helped me or hurt me - I was definitely fighting throughout so I didn't exactly relax or get to calm myself at any point - which might have been what hurt me in T2?

Comments:

I am sad to say I lost my desired 3rd place in T1. :( Very sad. I don't know what was wrong with me honestly. I made it back to my bike and hadn't even pulled my wetsuit down to my waist and couldn't figure out why. I know I was fidding with trying to get it off with my Garmin which is completely impossible - but I was still very out of it. So I tried to re-gather myself and get things going. I had to put on a shirt (St Jude singlet) which was new to me - but I really think it was the wetsuit that got to me. I might need to consider not wearing my garmin... just having it for the bike and run. That would certainly remove a challenge from taking off the wetsuit. I'm not sure how else to improve this transition unless I go to no socks and bike shoes on the pedals... and I'm honeslty not sure I'm coordinated enough for that. We'll see. Certainly hurt on this race so maybe it hurt just enough to make a change.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

Just want to bring the reader's attention to the Number ONE above in the age group rank field. :-) That is the first time I've been able to put a number 1 anywhere in a race report. I hammered it on the bike. I tried not to let up for a minute. I did not look at my power. I didn't want to think it was too high - I wanted to go all out and see where it got me. I wasn't stupid - don't get me wrong. I have a very natural instinct not to let myself go aerobic - so I know my own sense of RPE will protect me - but I just based it off that and went. I did stop at one point to ask a rider if he needed helped - it looked like he had crashed and was lying under his bike on the side of the road. He was it was just cramps so I sped back up.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I was happy with my bike performance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

New kind of bike rack - and the guy next to me moved over a slot so I got confused. But other than that - this was an okay transition.
What would you do differently?:

I'm having a hard time recalling this transition - so I think it was pretty good. I do not foresee myself ever jumping off a moving bike. I slide through the dismount line sideways and hop off. Speedplay shoes do not allow true running - so the only other way to improve this is to run barefoot and leave the shoes on the bike.
Run
  • 25m 1s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Hard to get going on the run this time. I'd been pushing it for the entire race. just needed to mentally keep going - mile 1 to 1.5 was the hardest. I saw my kids just before mile 1 which definitely helped - got high 5's from them. I'd been hoping for sub 25 (sub 8 for all splits), so I was close. There's a hill heading out of hte park and I made a mistake of glancing at my garmin and saw 4.7 for my hr zone and though - oops - that's too high. But tried to ignore it and keep pushing - but didn't want to get to 5.
What would you do differently?:

not sure - I'd like to say I'd push harder - but with 1/2 to go I really tried and had nothing - so I like to have that feeling to know I've given it all.
Post race
Warm down:

none - hung out talking with my brother and sister-in-law who had babysit Sam and Jen and brought them to the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Time in T1 killed me. And of course I can't be sure - but I haven't been eating exceptionally well since the half iron and gained weight! LOL... that can't have helped.

Event comments:

Fun race, fun race atmosphere. I did not like the ocean swim though.
