Event warmup:

short run followed by some stretching and then a nice easy swim to get my arms stretched out
Swim
  • 28m 54s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

the swim is by far my best leg so I went out strong to try and get a head start for the climb up Donner summit on the bike, The only thing I would do different on the swim would have been to warm up more.
Transition 1
  • 00m
What would you do differently?:

pop a gel before I left because I needed it for that climb up the summit!
Bike
  • 1h 48m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 13.70 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

fuel more, hydration was good
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 1h 16m
  • 6.52 miles
  • 11m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

By the time I got to the run, I had no more fuel in the tank...The first mile started off well, but I never quite lost the bricks in my legs after leaving the bike, and as a result I pretty much crawled around the lake. Additionally, I had a little runner's knee that was bothering me.
What would you do differently?:

Stick it out and picked up the pace a little!
Post race
Warm down:

Jumped in the lake!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I the elevation definitely affected me, I trained at about 3,000ft and Lake Donner is around 6,000ft I think. I also should have done more longer distance run workouts to build up my running endurance more.

Event comments:

The race was well organized, and I never felt rushed or worried that I didn't know where the course was going. Great race briefing and plenty of aid stations, plus free Sierra Nevada at the finish!

Course: As soon as you get on the bike you start the 3.5 mile climb up hwy 40 to the summit for a total elevation change of about 1000 ft. It's a nice cruise downhill from there to the turnaround point at Kingvale. Once you turn around though, you have to climb back up that nice downhill you just finished...and its a gradual uphill all the way back to the summit at Sugar Bowl ski park. But the descent from the top is awesome. Very fun cornering and great views of Donner Lake on the way down!
