Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep well at all. Must have been nerves about first IM. Woke up at 4:00 to eat bagel w/ peanut butter and honey and Perform with about 300 extra calories of Carbo-Pro. Drank water after that. Went to transition to pump up tires, fill speed-fil with water and put bottles on bike. (One bottle of Perform, One bottle w/ 800 cal of Carbo-Pro and a little Gatorade for flavor.) Walked to swim start.
Event warmup:

Entered the water with about 15 minutes until start. Saw the docks and decided to hop up and sit rather than tread water the entire time. Found a nice spot to start about 1 minute before gun.
Swim
  • 1h 23m 5s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

The MOP was pretty physical on the way down the lake and in the canal. I did a decent job keeping my breathing slow and concentrating on gliding with each stroke. Wish visibility would have been better to keep from swimming up onto people's backs and having the same done to me.
What would you do differently?:

More open water swim practice. Work on technique for next time to be in front of the masses. Should have run across the timing mat rather than walk from the swim exit stairs. Take salt tabs before start...felt a cramp in my hamstring in canal.
Transition 1
  • 08m 41s
Comments:

Wanted to take my time in T1 to keep the HR low.
What would you do differently?:

Should not have applied my own sunscreen. Wasted time doing it.
Bike
  • 5h 43m 38s
  • 112 miles
  • 19.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went really well. Started out a little fast and recognized that I needed to back it down. Nutrition and hydration plan worked well. Wanted to ride as easily as possible. Was able to utilize my experience riding the course to conserve energy. Expected the headwind to play a bigger factor on the way back than it did. Shut down the effort once I reached Woodlands Parkway.
What would you do differently?:

Felt like I left just about the right amount in the tank for the run.
Transition 2
  • 07m 47s
Comments:

Had to hit the Port-o-Potty and then changed from bike to run gear.
What would you do differently?:

Wasted time trying to put a bandaid on my heel. It didn't stick, so I went with Vasaline.
Run
  • 4h 40m 16s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out a little quick...backed the HR down to 145 and it stayed right around there for the run. First loop went by pretty quickly. Hit up each aid station for Ice sponges, water, Perform. Ate Shot Bloks and Meta Salt every 30 minutes. Near the end of the first loop the female leader passed me with TV cams and I picked up the pace for a bit. Second loop still felt pretty good. Walked through each aid station. Contemplated getting dry socks at Special Needs after the second loop. Passed up the bag and started on the third loop. Still running between aid stations. Hit up some chicken broth with helped settle my stomach. Overall, I kept waiting for the moment when I was forced to walk, but it never came. Kept a close eye on my HR and time for salt.
What would you do differently?:

Seemed like the plan worked. I don't think I left much in the tank. Maybe could have really pushed it the last bit but I think the entire race went really well.
Post race
Warm down:

Post race stretching from massage therapist.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Could have had faster transitions.

Event comments:

Amazing volunteers!! Very well organized. Beautiful bike course. Spectator friendly and athlete inspiring 3 loop run course.

Very seriously considering doing this again next year.

I feel bad for those who were stopped on the bike at intersections.
