Pre-race routine:

Woke up super early (um 3a), couldn't sleep so decided to have oatmeal. Later had bagel with cream cheese and orange juice. Got to race site super early (5:15a) before the sun came up, it was at a state park so no lights, and it was pitch black- candles lighting the way to check-in. I felt like I was in the wilderness! :) Buses to transport us to the start came a bit late, and it was an adventure getting to the start- funny bus driver, and it was a bit concerning at times whether we'd make it. Of course we did. :)
Event warmup:

a few arm circles!

Comments:

3... 2... 1... cough cough!! Yeah, water went straight into my mouth at the start, so it took a few seconds to get over that. After that, I was off! Tried to get into a rhythm to start with, my attempt apparently didn't go so well. I started getting a side stitch within like 10 minutes or so! (Seriously, wtf?! I cannot seem to avoid side stitches!!) But luckily, I started to swim more smoothly and comfortably and that was the last I experienced that. Phew!! Swimming bilaterally helped keep me comfortable which I did most of the time. It seemed like my legs were more quickly getting fatigued than my arms, I found that interesting. At around the 40 minute mark I was starting to feel like it was a really long swim (ha!) and there were a couple of times that the buoys I was swimming towards did not seem to be getting any closer to me! The buoys were pretty easy to spot most of the time, and the 1 or 2 times I did have trouble seeing the next one, I just swam where I saw swimmers. For much of the swim there were many others within sight, so I never really felt alone even though I was on the slower side. I was so happy to see the finish line beach, but that also seemed to take forever to get to once I sighted it! But once I was there, yay!!
What would you do differently?:

Overall I am pretty happy for my first go at a 5K OWS!
Post race
Warm down:

Stood around and ate bagels and a muffin. It started to get a bit chilly!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of ability to swim straight.

Event comments:

This was a first year event, and also the first 5K OWS in the area. I think this is a great little event which I recommend! Lots of high school kiddies. Also lots of kayakers/volunteers out there. Just remember a flashlight if you're going to arrive before dawn!
