Swim
Comments: This was a wild start! All women doing the sprint tri (as opposed to the "my first tri") started at the same time. It was definitely like being in a "washing machine!" Took me all the way to the first bouy to break away from others. Lots of body contact! Had to swim often with my head out of the water to keep from running into others. Tried to do this freestyle, but a few strokes were breaststroke. It made me short of breath swimming with head out of water. But once I got around the bouy it was pretty open and so I settled into a good rhythm with bilateral breathing. Had some trouble with my goggles leaking and since I wore my contacts for the first time during a race, breaststroked a few times to get the water out. What would you do differently?: Try to fight to the front and break away sooner. And make sure my goggles were tighter so the left side didn't take on water! Transition 1
Comments: There was quite a run from the lake to transition, but I ran the whole way, washed off dirty/sandy feet and got socks/shoes on fairly quickly. What would you do differently?: Need to practice getting onto the bike faster. Bike
Comments: Had to ride my "fat tire" bike so I'm pretty pleased with this time. It was a nice flat, comfortable ride. Was a bit frustrated with women I started with (and apparently came out before on the swim) passed me on the bike because of my slower bike! What would you do differently?: Get a new bike! Transition 2
Comments: Got half way out of the transition zone and realized I had forgotten to put on my race belt with number! So lost a few seconds going back. What would you do differently?: Put my number belt on with I go out for the bike. Run
Comments: Well I had wanted to run 11/miles. Didn't happen. Walked a couple of brief periods hoping that I'd be able to run faster afterwards, but it didn't help much. What would you do differently?: Run faster? I'd like to know how. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, found my family, got some low-fat chocolate milk and a banana. Sat down for a bit and visited with family while waiting for awards. Supposed to get an award for coming in 3rd in my age group, but I guess they ran short because some people (and I was one) didn't get their awards. Said they'd mail it to me. What limited your ability to perform faster: Fat tire made for a slower bike ride, and I don't know why I can't seem to get faster on the run. Event comments: This was a well-run race. It was put on to honor a triathlete from the local area who was killed with all three of his grown sons in a drunk driving accident a month previously. (Their car was hit head-on by a drunk driver.) Sponsors did a good job with organization except that they ran out of plaques! Last updated: 2010-07-23 12:00 AM

Didn't sleep very well the night before. Seems like I never sleep very well the night before. Got up at 4:15 (after waking up every hour all night long, I finally decided to just get up)! Had a cup of coffee, a peanut butter sandwich and a banana. Headed out to the race about 5:15 to get there by 6:00. Met my daughter and we fumbled around in the pitch dark trying to get set up, etc.
Jogged back and forth to my car several times and then got into the water once the sun came up for a short warm up. No temp on the water but it was nice and warm. This particular lake has very dark water because of the vegetation in it. Couldn't even see my hand as I put it into the water! Felt like swimming in the pitch black!!
