Pre-race routine:

Toast with jelly for breakfast, NOS to flush the system, 1 gu gel 45 minutes before the swim, another 15 minute prior to the swim
Event warmup:

Short swim prior to start since I was in the first wave
Swim
  • 24m 39s
  • 879 yards
  • 02m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lots of people in the wave. Maybe 60 or so. There was never really any space to yourself the entire swim. Got slapped, tickled, my head pushed down into the water, and my leg grabbed and yanked on.

6 Buoys made for awesome sighting, no problems whatsoever. Buoys were very easy to see, however wasn't nearly as good at staying on top of them today. Not really off course, just generally closer to the buoys.

No wetsuit, so swim was slower, but I think the swim was longer. 24:39 is not at all what I would have expected for 1/2 mile swim (would have expected to be under 20 minutes), but everyone else pretty much said the same thing, so that is good.
What would you do differently?:

Get closer to buoys
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Had a gu gell stored in my tri shorts pocket and had it pulled out and using it as I was running out of the water. That certainly improved my transition time. I ran the entire way out of the water from the swim up to transition. I also went without socks, so that saved time too.
What would you do differently?:

Glasses were fogged up the entire time and had to take them off, maybe forgo them or figure out how to keep them from fogging
Bike
  • 48m 8s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.70 mile/hr
Comments:

I did much better on the hills than I have previously on this same course. I was able to stay in the seat and climb them with only getting out of the seat a few times. Also was not totally spent at the top of climbs so was able to keep going. Much higher cadence this year made the difference.

Drank WAR and had a gu chomp about every 10 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to work on hills, just not that good at them. Need to also work on using an aero bottle to save more time so I don't waste time grabbing a water bottle.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

This was a relay with my sister. So as soon as I crossed the mat into transition she grabbed the chip and left. Great planning on our part. Saved time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 33m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Post race
Warm down:

Catch my breath, I left it out on the course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills, long swim, not using aero bottle

Event comments:

It was a great race and a good experience for my sisters first race.
