Swim
Comments: As usual had a hard time getting going though it picked up most of the way through. Felt good at finish but started slow. Expected to do it in 30-35 minutes What would you do differently?: More open water swim practice and more swimming training. Once a week Master's Class is OK, but not enough. Transition 1
Comments: Took my time drying off, drinking and eating a couple of energy blocks. I was feeling a bit hungry towards the end of the swim, so wanted to be sure I had something before the bike. Also, long transition run to the chip mat, then a long run to the bike start. What would you do differently?: Consider no socks, less drying time, nutrition on bike instead of before. Bike
Comments: Felt good. I was passed by a lot of men and a few women (all but one younger than me). Passed a bunch of people as well. I did the two loops in about the same time so paced myself well. Drank every 15 minutes and ingested a gel every 30 minutes to ensure sufficient energy. What would you do differently?: Could probably do it slightly faster, though at this point, not much. Transition 2
Comments: Inner thighs very tight after bike, unable to run much if at all from dismount to transition. Distance from dismount to timing mat to transition very long. Again, took awhile to drink wipe sweat off, ingest some energy blocks, etc. Very hot and humid, did not want to bonk on run What would you do differently?: Practice the bike to run transition and figure out how to deal with the very tight inner thighs. Run
Comments: Stiff at beginning so walked, then alternated running and walking counting to 60 slowly for each. This worked for most of the 1st loop. Walked most of second loop. Very hot and humid, really brutal running weather. Many people walking a lot or alternating. Took water and Heed at every opportunity. Ran the last couple hundred yards. Speed laces on shoes were a bit tight so had to stop to loosen them. Also took a minute to use the public restroom on the first loop. What would you do differently?: Need to train more for running. Also need to do some serious bricks. Post race
Warm down: Some stretching before and after eating. What limited your ability to perform faster: Weather was very bad for this race. Also, I hadn't run enough this training season. Event comments: CGI does a good job of planning and organizing their races. Course was reasonable for all three, though not as shady as they said initially. Met my goals for my first Olympic - I finished, I wasn't last in my age group and I did it in under 4 hours. I had hoped for 3:30. With better swim and run training and cooler weather, I might be able to do that. Last updated: 2010-07-25 12:00 AM
