Swim
Comments: This was probably my best swim to date, all things being considered. I have only done 1 2000m or longer swim, ever so I was very happy to do this around a 2:10 pace. My sighting was decent the whole time as I stayed on a pretty solid line with the buoys and rounded them spot on...for me anyway. What would you do differently?: Not a whole lot to be honest. Get in some more swim work to drop my pace to below 2:00 Transition 1
Comments: Took it easy to catch my breath...as was my plan...so I knew it would be longer than usual. What would you do differently?: My first race so I didn't know what to expect. Should get this under 5:00 from now on. Bike
Comments: Took it easy on the bike, as was part of my plan again, so I would have plenty left in the tank on the run. That turned out to not happen so in hindsight I should have pushed this harder and gotten to 18.5 - 19 mph avg which would have gotten me under my 7:00 goal. Something else to know for next time. It was bad ass seeing Laurie, Shane, Tracy, Omar and Round at a couple of places on the bike course...it's amazing what seeing friends and family out there will do for your psyche. Overall I just went steady and tried to enjoy the moment as much as possible. What would you do differently?: Push it harder. Transition 2
Comments: I expected to take 10 minutes here to just relax and get my HR down so that I would be able to run longer in the 13.1. Turns out that plan was crap so I should have just gotten the hell out of T2 ASAP and saved the time. What would you do differently?: See above Run
Comments: This is a common thread...I can't run in races where it's over 80 degrees. Not sure why but I totally bonk out...no matter what I do on the bike or leading up to the race. Have no clue why this happens?? After I had to stop running for the first time at 1.5 miles...the next 2 miles was run/walk and then at mile 4 it was pretty much walk for 10 minutes run for 2 or 3, rinse and repeat. I pretty much suck so I just started laughing after mile 4 and accepted it and tried to have fun and enjoy getting closer and closer to the finish. Shane and Laurie met me a mile and a half from the finish and walk/jogged all the way in with me which really helped. I then saw Omar, Round and P Fiddy right near the finishing area, which is badass going into that arena, I have to admit. What would you do differently?: Have no clue...I just suck on the run. It is what it is. Post race
Warm down: Big hugs from Laurie, Omar, Shane, and P Fiddy...I was happy but totally exhausted. Took some pics, grabbed our shit and left. What limited your ability to perform faster: Just not being any good. :) Event comments: Great race as far as I am concerned. Only negatives are it's so far away from everything so it's a haul to the race site and it's still too warm, for me anyway, in early October. Other than that...what a blast! Woke up at 5am after a usual pre-race night of not much sleep. Got up, had a bowl of cereal with a banana and blueberries and water with a Nuun tab. Then took a long shower to warm up and get right with tri.
P Fiddy, Shane, and I left the Hyatt around 6:15 and got to the race site about 6:45. BIG mistake as there was about 1,000 other people arriving at the same time. Shane dropped us off and I went in to set up my T2 as the T1 and T2 were split. I was all out of sorts so Fitz went back to the car with Shane and I finished up T2 and took the bus shuttle to T1. Even though I got there right at the 7:15 T1 cut off, there were about 800 athletes still setting up so they didn't cut it off until 8, I think. Kind of a cluster fuck of a morning.
None to speak of. Found Shane about 15 mins before I hit the water and eventually Shane's wife Tracy and Laurie showed up and waved at me as they announced my wave to get in line. A few good wishes from Shane and it was into the water for my first 70.3....
