Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30AM after a night of poor sleep, so the first place I headed was the coffee pot. Ate a bagel with cream cheese with water. Arrived at the race site around 6:15AM and turned in registration.
Event warmup:

Walked around for 10 minutes and mingled towards the back of the starting line.

Comments:

After seeing my HR data, I was trying to decide how my average heart rate was so high. The only thing I can think of is that the adrenaline, heat, tired legs and coffee somehow contributed. I didn't feel that close to my max, and would give the overall run an RPE value of 5 or 6.

It was a beautiful morning for the run, and much cooler than what I'm used to running in. I felt really strong the first mile, and then the legs started to tire. At the moment, there aren't a lot of hills incorporated into my running, so I believe they contributed to my fatigue.

I was also wearing a new pair of VFF KSOs, which hadn't been broken in. These created blisters on my feet as I ran, and I was in a good amount of pain at times.

Overall though, I was extremely happy with my finishing time. It's 11 minutes faster than my last 5k two years ago.
What would you do differently?:

Wear an older pair of shoes rather than push through with the new pair and make my feet suffer.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around afterward and had a quarter of a banana and orange. Drank a small bottle of Gatorade because there wasn't any water available at the finish line - not sure what was up with that.

Afterward, I headed to the finish line to cheer on the remainder of the participants. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of people cheering at the finish line. That last 15 minutes or so as I waited for the last of the runners, I was the only person clapping and cheering, although there were still close to a hundred people just milling about.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My fitness level. I've only run 2 miles in training so far, so this was the furthest I've run in a very, very long time.

Event comments:

I was displeased with the lack of things to do but stand around after the finish. This was a small race, but I kind of expected more from the event.
