Swim
Comments: Started dead last -- avoiding the water as long as possible. First trip out through the deep water went great. Felt relaxed and comfortable. On the second trip, first half again felt very good. At the turn, got bounced around pretty good and tensed up. Flipped on my back and took it easy. Passed a few folks / with starting last no one could pass me! What would you do differently?: Practice, practice, practice! Transition 1
Comments: Took my time with the transition. Nothing special. What would you do differently?: Need to practice these and focus on speed more. For this event, goal was to take it easy/relax. Bike
Comments: Killed the bike!!! Previous PR for a ride was 18.7 MPH. Hit 19.5 MPH. Pedaled very smoothly and held a bit higher cadence at around 90RPM. Might have been able to push it a bit harder, but was very pleased as it seemed to be a very comfortable, controlled ride. Did have a few issues with some folks that were not staying to the right. Even so, must have passed a couple hundred folks! What would you do differently?: Continue to build the base. Need to start doing some interval / speed / power work. Transition 2
Comments: Not very skilled at running with the bike in the shoes. Need to work on this. Again, took my time. What would you do differently?: Need to practice the process and get comfortable running in the bike shoes. Run
Comments: As I left transition, HR had gotten down to 151 and was feeling OK. It quickly climbed in to the 170's, but felt fine. Even so, took it very easy with focus on breathing and relaxing. By 1/2 way out to the turn around felt very good. At turn around, started to build the pace. Felt really good about providing encouragement to a bunch of folks. Actually picked a guy up with about 1/2 mile to go -- he was walking -- and talked him throuh the finish. He offered a big thanks as he shared he needed a KITA. Finished very strong and felt fine afterwards. What would you do differently?: Again, key is building the base. Good approach to build as race goes along. Need to be able to take it out a bit faster. Post race
Warm down: Nice easy, 1/4 mile walk to let the HR settle. Came back to normal pretty quickly except for perspiring. What limited your ability to perform faster: In the swim, issue is confidence. For bike and run, the key is building a better base and doing some speed work. Overall pace was outstanding as I exceeded expectations on each leg. Event comments: After the last one, was frustrated and pissed. This event went great and I exceeded my expectations. I've still got a long way to go on the swim but can see the progress. On the bike and run, it's great to see the training pay off with solid results. Last updated: 2010-07-27 12:00 AM

Two weeks back I did the "Stoneman" sprint tri in Springfield and had a major crash and burn. Time was 1:48 and absolutely died in the swim (28 minutes). I was very spooked for this one; BUT, also hell bent on redemption. Spent the entire last week focusing on the swim.
No real warm up. With 1600 people starting 4-5 at a time, hard to get keyed up. Did some light stretching.
