Pre-race routine:

The good news about having your spouse race too is I didn't have to get dressed in the laundry room in an effort not to wake said spouse. The bad news is race nerves! LOL Reality is he is more prompt than I am :)
Get 3 of the 5 kids ready to go. Coffee & Odwalla bar in the car.
Event warmup:

Set up transition, walked to the lake and went on a couple warm up swims. Sat with Betsy eating my banana until all the dudes were in the water. Found Jennifer for prayer, lined up with Tif & Nik.
Swim
  • 12m 30s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the most contact I have ever had in a race, even worse than Tejas. There were very few strokes without contact of some kind. Swam right on top of a couple of backstrokers.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I started pretty close to the front and to the right but kept getting run into. I do think I could have pushed it a bit harder in the middle.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Loved the higher racks, easier to get my bike off. Long run in cleets and volunteer told me to go wrong way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I did run the whole time. Still could use some practice clipping in and getting moving.
Bike
  • 46m
  • 14 miles
  • 18.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Ok so I TOTALLY dorked up the 2nd U-Turn, not sure what the deal was but I could not turn the bike and almost headed into the grass. That sucked. Nobody passed me during this but I did lose some time on the chick in front of me. The bike had crowded sections. A lot of racers for a short course I hope it doesn't grow in numbers next year. Passed more than I got passed. My first race with Dori and I am happy.
What would you do differently?:

I tried to stay focussed on cadence rather than speed which was good but I lost focus a couple of times. Work on cornering.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Not bad.
What would you do differently?:

Took time to put Garmin on for run and should have just ran with it.
Run
  • 44m 35s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 12m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

So this is where I stink it up. This run kicked my ass last year and I was back for redemption. That didn't really happen but I didn't feel it got me again this year. My pace was much better, no walking just couldn't go as fast as I wanted to. The Garmin helped because I wanted to go too fast the first mile and forced myself to slow down.
What would you do differently?:

I was THIRSTY! I think there were plenty of water stations, water was cold, volunteers were awesome there just wasn't water where *I* wanted it. I run with a Camelbak and probably drink from it too often and get spoiled.
Post race
Warm down:

I was toast at the end. Walked as much as I could then hung my body over one of the barriers. Saw Ken, kids and friends and walked over to some shade to sit. Amazing post race activities - band, beverages, food, etc.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was hot. I am getting faster but I am still slow on the run.

Event comments:

RD really listens to race feedback and makes changes. This is a very well run race with everything an athlete could ask for.
If you ever wanted to start your own business though there is a definite need for a company in Houston who can time races effectively. I left at 10:25 not knowing my times. There was only one posting once I finished, no updates and timing sheets were in a stack on the table held down with a cowbell and they kept getting blown away. It seems once half the field is finished the timing guys figure that is enough and stop.

Last part was bumpy and slowed down my pace but honestly most of the course was very smooth and awesome. No strong wind today!
