Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5zm, ate two slices of toast with PB, drank an iced tea. Woke up TSW, made sure she got up, then loaded the bags. Got the urge, went to the BR...succeeded!. Easy drive down - about an hour - we talked the whole way down (about work, unfortunately), but it kept my mind off the race. Pretty relaxed, actually; looked at this as a practice race, a chance to swim in OW, hammer it on the bike, and see how I held up on the run.
Event warmup:

Rode from parking to the transition area, set up (got a decent spot with plenty of room), got my packet, set up transition area, went to the bathroom. We got to wear our wetsuits, which surprised the heck out of me, didn't think there was any way we'd be able to do that. I only brought mine along as an afterthought; would've been big-time PO'd if I hadn't. I put mine on nd went down to the water to swim around a little bit, floated, took some deep breaths. Water was surprisingly shallow at the start, maybe abotut mid-thigh. Might've actually been more around knee-level but for the suction effect of the lake bottom, which was pretty nasty feeling on the feet. I'd heard it was a layer of goose poop - there were a few of them flying around near the start, acting as if all these strangers were in the pooping place - but I tried not to think too long on that.

Comments:

A little slower than expected, got out of the water in 12:44, about a minute slower than pool. Got winded before making it halfway out the first leg. Had to do some backstroking and dog-paddling to catch breath before starting again for the rest of swim. Was certainly hoping for better but not hugely disappointed.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure...thought I started pretty slow, which is what I wanted, but got winded anyway.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

127th overall. Struggled to get wetsuit off. Trying to think why this takes so long...probably because I'm putting too much on before I start running for the T1 exit. Would love to cut about 30 seconds off this.
What would you do differently?:

Practice with the wetsuit? Almost fell over today getting it off. Maybe go with less stuff (skullie and bike tools, not clip helmet over handlebar.

Comments:

Really pushed it here for me, wanted to average over 20mph and to heck with the run; didn't get that close. Being a three-loop course I actually saw some of the leaders out there...absolutely stunning how fast they ride, just amazing...makes mewonder if there's something wrong with me. I pushed it past the point of leg soreness; HR averaged 152 so, given the natural lag, I was probably riding around threshold for most of this. And a cadence of 89 is high for me. Took my feet out of the shoes right after making the turn back towards transition...might've been a little too early. Not totally displeased with this ride but not completely satisfied either.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not much.
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Another slow transition. Feet were out of my shoes coming in, but I had a little trouble getting one runnign shoe on, had to take it off and do it again. Lost more time when I looked down to hit the Lap button on the Garmin, just before the timing mat, and it wasn't on my wrist! I'd left it on the bike like a moron. Guess that's better than running out of T2 with my bike helmet on.
What would you do differently?:

Remember the Garmin!

Comments:

Had zero expectations here. After pushing it on the bike I figured this would be a real sufferfest. So I had a very specific plan and I pretty much followed it to the letter. Ran generally easy for four minutes, walked one, and repeated one more time, by which time I was 10 minutes in. At that point I pushed fairly hard for 7:30 (did walk briefly through water stop), walked about a minute, then repeated. Walked another minute then ran generally slow with an eye toward finishing fast the last tenth of a mile or so, maybe looking good for a picture (which has yet to happen). A guy passed me right about there and I basically paced off him for the finish. In the end I was actually surprised by my time; given what I did on the bike, I didn't expect to break 34 minutes on this run. But I actually didn't feel as bad as I'd expected. HR averaged 162 on run; didn't look to see where it was at the end.
What would you do differently?:

I gotta become a better runner. Obviously the swimming sucks, but if I could just do a minute per mile faster it would make a huge difference. Been doing a lot of running for me, but not that much improvement. Some, but not to the point where I'd like to be. Just gotta keep running I guess.
Post race
Warm down:

Just some walking around with TSW. Ate an egg sandwich, a cookie, a granola bar, a very skinny banana, and a hard-boiled egg after cooling off. Very unlike me; strange that after the last two races I've really felt the urge to strap on the feedbag and chow down. No idea what's driving that, but in all previous races about all I could do was a banana and a bagel. Sat on a bench with TSW and watched the start of the kids tri; pretty fun, some of the kids were small and their bikes looked like toys you could fit under the tree. We were walking back to parking lot when some of the kids were coming back on their bikes, pedaling to beat the band, had their game faces on too. Saw a couple of over-zealous tri dads, though.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a C race, viewed as doing a brick with a couple hundred friends, making it a lot more fun. About the only thing I'd planned was to hammer on the bike to see what I could do, which probably impacted my run. Think I may do more bricks between now and Marlton Lakes, maybe shortening the running parts but pushing a higher intensity.

Event comments:

Another solid DQ race. Although the lake bottom's greasy squishiness was kind of disgusting, I still like this race because the water is shallow enough it eliminates the fear and worry lake swimming can generate, as at NJ State a couple of weeks ago. Can definitely see myself doing this one again. TSW said, "If I ever get up the courage to try one of these, this is the one I'll do."
