Swim
Comments: started fast and got into the wake of the fish, stayed in touch with their wake until the first turn, got to the turn and there was congestion, a perfect opportunity for the new barrel roll turn, hit it perfectly and squeezed between the bouy and a couple of guys. Navigation was spot on with two exceptions along the back stretch, tried going too long without sighting and pulled left. Navigated through the tail end of the first wave pretty well, hit the second turn well also, swam through a bunch of people walking out of the water until I caught a couple handfuls of the bottom then popped up and jogged out. What would you do differently?: Keep focused on form through the middle as I start to get fatigued. Transition 1
Comments: 2nd OA, 1st AG. Pretty solid T1, found rack well enough, couldn't see from far away but ran in general direction and spotted it, had to dodge a bit of traffic in transition. What would you do differently?: not much Bike
Comments: Got all the way out of the park and up to speed before putting feet into shoes, settled into a good pace pushing the effort but aware of the upcoming first climb, nothing real notable until near the halfway point, picked up a drafter on a downhill, got a little separation on the next climb but he got back on my tail when I slowed for the chicane at bottom of next descent, he hung for another half mile or so until we hit a small climb and I got away. What would you do differently?: push harder over the hills, just step the effort up another notch or two. Transition 2
Comments: 24 OA, 5AG. Pulled feet before I got into park, there were 3 people executing full stop dismounts in front of the line as I came in but weaved through them with no problems. Had a real hard time finding my rack, I looked back a couple of times to see if I ran past then finally spotted it ahead, not a bad spot just non-descript 15-20 rows back from the bike exit and 15-20 rows from the swim exit. Did not unbuckle helmet while running because I was too distracted looking for my rack. Put on socks due to a blister on my heal and shoes, grabbed number belt and headed out. What would you do differently?: Rack in a location I can spot from a distance. Run
Comments: passed a guy just before transition exit and wanted it to stick so started with a faster pace than planned. The rest of the race there were maybe 5 guys nicely spread out and going just the right pace for me to chase down, not too fast to catch but fast enough to force pushing the pace. Really felt good on the run, just focused on fast leg turnover, maybe a result of not pushing the bike hard enough, high-fived a bunch of friends both racing and volunteering. Had a brief moment where I had to figure out how to navigate through the S-turn to the finish with runners coming at me out of T2, saw a break in traffic and it wasn't a problem, glad I walked this part of the course before the race. What would you do differently?: nothing, a good run for where my training volume has been. Post race
Warm down: found the family, had some eats and drinks, chatted a bit then headed out. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think this was close to the limit for my current training level, might have been able to get a little more out of the bike and still hang on for the run. Overall a better than 5 minute improvement from same race 2 years ago, given that I'm coming off of two races where I felt I underperformed, including one that was a virtual wash with it's match from 2 years ago, this is a nice improvement. Event comments: Good race, I heard there were 900 people between the long, short, and du with many of them walkups at packet pickup. They rearranged the starting heats a bit and it worked out. No results available on-site and online results weren't available for more than a day, judging by the chaos in the online splits, there was a lot of hand work to get those results ready. Breakfast: toast w/ PBJ & banana, apple in the car, Cliff bar about 1 hr prior to start, lots of water.
Woke up early so arrived at 5:30 to get good transition spot, the best spots were already had but got a fine though non-descript spot, setup bike and transition, walked around and scouted run out and finish, good thing as the formerly paved path is now soft gravel and the finish involved a couple of sharp turns around transition.
Took a long swim warmup about 7am, double checked transition, watched the long course waves start, hit the can 1 last time, then got into the corral for the short course start.
