Swim
Comments: It was really foggy on the river. I couldn't see the buoys and I am the swimmer who gets dropped by the fast people but who is faster than the majority. With all the fog, I couldn't see others around me a lot of the time and I swam way off course on my way to the first buoy. After rounding the buoys and heading back down the river, I couldn't see the next buoy. I had no idea if I was swimming in a straight line or not. I could see a few swimmers ahead and even caught some of them. I was relieved when I finally spotted the buoy. What would you do differently?: I don't think I'd have worn my wetsuit. I didn't overheat but T1 was a little slow thanks to problems getting the suit off over the chip. Overall, I was very happy with my swim. My time was really good for the open water. My other open water swims haven't been close to what I can do in the pool and this one was pretty much spot on for where I am right now. Transition 1
Comments: Slow T1. Damn wetsuit. Everything else went smoothly though. I always have to sit in transition to get suit off and shoes on. What would you do differently?: Not wear suit. Bike
Comments: I felt fast on the bike. I guess I was reasonably fast but not quite as fast as I felt. The distance was actually a little shorter than the 12 miles so I wasn't quite at 19.49. I don't know the exact distance. I felt strong and at times I had to tell myself to back off and leave something for the run. Of course I didn't LOL. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: This was also slower than usual and I don't know why. Perhaps it was the distance from the timing mats to the bike but I thought my T2 was good. Run
Comments: I felt surprisingly good on the run. I didn't have heavy legs off the bike. I knew I wasn't running fast but I was very comfortable. A couple of times I had to remind myself that I was in a race, not out running the dog :) I focused on increasing my turnover in the hope that I would trot a bit faster. I conceded two overall places on the run which is frustrating but not unexpected. It put me in 6th place overall among the women which means I just missed out on an O/A award (they went 5 deep). The woman who placed 5th beat me by about 30 seconds but she wasn't one of the women who passed me on the run. She had a super-fast bike split. My knee gave out at the finish just as I turned onto the straight into the finish shoot. Not sure what that is all about. I haven't had trouble with this knee in the past. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Post race
Warm down: None What limited your ability to perform faster: Limited training. Seriously, I couldn't have had a better race for someone who does as little training as I do. Event comments: The course was great and the volunteers were great. Seems that they did things on the cheap this year though. Last updated: 2010-08-02 12:00 AM

Up at 5 AM. Coffee and toast. Packed the car and off to the race. I arrived around 6 AM and set up my transition spot. Hung out with club members and got more and more nervous.
I don't know why I get so nervous before races but I always do. Perhaps the first one of the season when I am not feeling too fit is the problem. I know I can do the distances so I don't know why I get so churned up. The women doing the sprint were the last wave to start so I had quite a wait. They were late starting so it was probably closer to 7:40 AM when our wave went.
No warm up. I figured the water would warm me up :)
