Pre-race routine:

Wanted to get to bed early as the race has an early start and about 1 hour from the house. Deb just kept doing stuff and putting lights on and off until about 11:30. Nicole woke up at 3 when she tossed her pillow on the floor. Went back to bed but before I knew it looked over and it was 4:02 and just got up as alarm was set for 4:15. Walked the dog, double checked all my stuff in the car and hit the road by 4:50. Ate a PB whole wheat bagel in the car on the way and drank 32 oz of gatorade as well as some water and my multi vitamins at the house. Was there early so could park in the free lot right next to transition and went about getting all my stuff set up without being rushed. At about 6:15 walked over to the boardwalk and to the water to check on the temp and chop. Water felt warmer than when I was on vacation last week and not too choppy. Took a quick dip with the wetsuit on and decided even though it was warm enough would stay with the suit for buoyancy.
Event warmup:

Walked the 1/3 of a mile to the swim start and had to swim out about 50 yards and tread at the buoys so figured that was enough.

Comments:

Definitely the best swim I've ever had from a comfort standpoint. Right from the beginning I was just taking it nice and smooth and I was able to start right on the buoy line as about 70 of the 80 or so of us in the water were way out to the left so I figured why not just stay close and shorten the distance. Only once did someone cut down from above and clobber me but I was able to just stay on the buoy line the whole time and not really get bothered. I hit the beach at 9:28 on my watch which I was ecstatic with. There was about a 75 or so yard run through the sand to the boardwalk and then another couple hundred feet from there to transition. For some reason that I still don't understand I walked the entire beach portion to the boardwalk like I wasn't in a race. Took over 2 minutes to hit the timing mat for the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Run out of the water and hustle my ass off instead of la di da ing during a race!
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Like always I just seem to relax way too much in transition. My next race I will make it a goal of mine to improve on my transition times.
What would you do differently?:

Move it faster!

Comments:

Felt like I was pushing it pretty good on the bike throughout the 1st loop and hit the approximate half way point at a little over 21 minutes so felt like a 20 mph average might be within my reach. Was still pushing it good and pretty comfortably about 2/3 through the 2nd lap when I misheard a volunteers instruction and started to go by a turn. I made a bad decision and jammed on the brakes and attempted to make the turn and started to fishtail and lose some control. Somehow I stayed upright but I was definitely shaken a bit mentally as it was almost a real ugly fall. Tried to get back going and was starting to when I was in aero and suddenly my right aero pad came loose from the bars. I managed to catch the pad but saw/heard a couple of "parts" fall back behind me. Stopped turned around and looked for a minute or two but wasn't even sure exactly what I was looking for. Eventually gave up and got going again. Turns out it was just spacers that I should be able to replace easily. Only had about 2 miles to go so just tried to dig and finish strong with an aero pad jammed down my shorts for safe keeping.
What would you do differently?:

Improve my listening skills and not try any stupid maneuvers and also just forget the pieces of equipment as long as the bike can still move forward.
Transition 2

Comments:

See T1. Just no idea what I do in there for almost 2 minutes.
Run

Comments:

Run was ok but didn't feel a lot of response in my legs. Not surpising since other than my races I've done zero bricks during training and the training itself has been way to hit and miss. Once I hit the turnaround I was able to target about 1/2 dozen people and catch them including a jersey shore triclub guy who was about 100 yards ahead of me. I was able to reel him in as we approached the finishing chute.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I can do about it this year but I really want to be able to train and put whatever I have forward in my races for next year. That's going to be the goal.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a bunch of water as it was quite hot and the run course was entirely in the sun and it was starting to beat down pretty good. Decided to buy one of the Tech shirts and then strolled down the boardwalk a bit as a cool down. Haven't been to Asbury Park since college (Stone Pony visits) but they've done a great job at revitalizing it and it's really quite nice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Age and training in some order.

Event comments:

Loved the course and the scenery and plan on doing this race next year if I can. Chris is very safety aware and puts on a good show and really tries to take care of the racers.
