Age Group Rank = 8/19
Pre-race routine:

start time at 9AM. Woke up at 4:30AM. Had bagel with PB+honey. drank bottle of 1/2 strength gatorade by 7:30AM when I had two mini PB+honey sandwhiches.
Event warmup:

biked to uncle Gerry's for my ride (15 minutes downhill) at 6AM. Did a light warmup in the water to try out my new westsuit.
Swim
  • 24m 59s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

First time trying out my new wetsuit. Third OWS ever. I am SCHOCKED at my time considering I swam 33:xx in Canmore a month ago and only do ~30min at this distance... there's a couple of options:
1) The suit is amazing and chopped off 5 min. because my swim form is so terrible without it
2) The course was short
Some mild bumping in the beginning and throughout, but nothing that hindered me. Calfs cramped a little (never happened before) but nothing I couldn't fix.
Nonetheless, I'm happy that I somehow managed to be 14th out of the water overall.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more OWS - this was only my third time doing it. Need to HTFU and drive to a lake... they're just not close to me where I am.
Practice drafting and keeping up with stronger ppl to enable me to do that.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I don't know what my T1 time is because I didn't have a computer on my bike to do the math and I don't have a waterproof watch.
I could still be faster. I got the wetsuit off not bad, but I could have shaved a few seconds I think by practicing getting it off my heels more seemless. Also could have shaved a few seconds putting on my helmet/shades, etc.

Need to practice doing a flying mount.
Shoes were clipped/elasticed in which worked good.
Not good at getting shoes in while on the bike. On my first attempt my feet got wedged in weird and I had to fiddle around a bit to get them on. Not very quick and cost me some time as I had to fiddle with both shoes. PRACTICE MORE. But at least I was moving forward.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more of a flying mount.
Practice T1 transition, especially getting wetsuit off.
Practice getting into shoes on bike.

Comments:

Need to train more on the bike I guess. I am dissapointed with my bike time. I didn't like this course, but whatever... we were all riding on it. The corners and hill made me lose a lot of time b/c i suck at doing them (relative to others IMHO).
What would you do differently?:

Put in more time on the bike. Learn to push it on the bike more. I'm still new to this cycling bit (started in January 2010)so I have a lot of room to grow I think
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No real qualms about this transition. Maybe I could have shaved 3 seconds if I had practiced a bit more and was slightly more organized. But I was happy with this... although the next person in my AG did beat me by 4 secs... =) Every second counts!
What would you do differently?:

Practice.
Run
  • 41m 4s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 07s  min/km
Comments:

The run is my baby =)
Felt pretty good I guess. Not in the same pain like after Turner Valley. Took about 15 minutes to get my legs and then I managed to get into a groove and go faster.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure... maybe more speed work, more bricks? I think I did fine.

Event comments:

Not my favourite bike/run. run course was on sidewalks which isn't fun, but i recognize as neccessary. Bike course I already commented on.

Course: Didn't love this course. Road was open to traffic but it wasn't bad. Bigass hill going down was a little problematic: 1) While it wasn't in bad condition it wasn't great - there was some big potholes that could have caused big wipeouts 2) I lost my waterbottle the first time on the hill - lucky to get a volunteer to throw it back to me going up on lap 3! 3) I got told to "be more cautious" going down my first lap... 4) Got very croweded and we're technically not supposed to pass. On the last lap when the sprint was out I had to ride my brakes b/c it wasn't safe to pass 5) Too narrow of a hill - especially with traffic 6) A few tight corners including a 180 degree turn - i suck at cornering, especially coming off of the big hill... slowed me down a lot
