Pre-race routine:

woke up at 5am after sleeping for about 3 hours. Loaded car and waited for friends to show up. left at 7am from hotel and rushed to the race site from Shreveport.
Event warmup:

Walked from the parking area to transition. Must have been at least a mile. Took a quick swim for about 200 meters or so.
Swim
  • 18m 12s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was miserable! Super hot water caused my HR to spike and made for a difficult swim for me. I started on the right outside about middle of the pack. I made it towards the front before the first bouy but did not feel strong.
What would you do differently?:

Should have swam more over the last six months. I only hit the pool about 4 times since March. Did two OWS of about a mile each since May. Definitely need to swim more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

I took my time in transition, but it really was a long way from the swim exit to the transition area. I purposely took extra time to allow my HR to stop redlining from the swim.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU!
Bike
  • 50m 29s

  • 21.63 mile/hr
Comments:

Fumbled a bit while mountiing the bike. Legs were a little wobbly. I was not able to settle into a good cadence until about mile 4. Mile breathing and HR finally came into a steady comfortable rate. I started to hammer pretty good and caught my buddy Rick and spoke with him for a minute before dropping him. I worked my way forward through the field and met with some of the elite racers that were beginning to bunch up. I passed and got passed by the same group of riders for about 6 miles until I noticed after my last pull at about mile 10 that there were 15 or so guys drafting off me. I was pulling a long peleton unintentionally. This really pissed me off and I shifter into a smaller gear on the back and stood up and dropped them. After they were about half a mile back I finally slowed my roll. I was sustaining 25-27 mph on the flats for good periods and climbing the hills like a champ. I noticed that the guys who would pass me on the flats were getting reeled in on the hills. All in all, I had the fastest bike split of my 5 buddies that I came with. This was a good ride for me and I feel that I could have gone harder but wanted to conserve for the run and was running out of water quick due to the heat. I also forgot my gatorade and was running straight water. mistake! Also, my Profile Design Bottle bracket broke before the race and I only had two bottles of water.
What would you do differently?:

Remember Gatorade. Remember Clif shots. Remeber Salt Tabs. Ride more than once per week since Febuary.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Still took my time and tried to relax. I forgot my Shot Blocks again!
What would you do differently?:

HTFU and remember my Shot Block and salt tabs.
Run
  • 31m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall a good run course. Water was every mile and had amino water too. No Gatorade though. DOH! Cold wet rags were great. I ran a very solid 6:50 pace for the first mile and then my quads began to cramp up severely. I decided to attempt a walk jog and realised that that my run would be a total scrap. I stopped and stretched, stopped and drank amino water and tried to get the cramps to chill out. Nothing worked so I walked all of mile two. By midway through mile 3, the cramps finally started to let up a little. I was able to run a 8:50 pace the rest of the way in with the cramps coming and going. This happens everytime I forget to take adequate electrolytes. I always seems to blow the hydration part of this equation during my races. Brick training goes so well and then I hammer the bike during the race and screw up the hydration and then it is a crampfest. Yea!
What would you do differently?:

remember Gatorade and Shot Blocks.
Post race
Warm down:

wait for my buddies to come in and then drink water and stretch. 5 minutes after I crossed the finish line, the cramps disappeared. I head to get a couple of beers and began feeling alright. Many beers later, I felt great!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited training time available due to LIFE, Grad School, Daugters, Wife, Dog, sleep, and many others.. Poor memory and fogetting my electrolyte replacement stuff.

Event comments:

Good venue. Great volunteers. Well organized. Cold beer. Awesome Schwag! Not too far from Dallas. Challenging course. Really Hot!

Overall, had a great time. Will definitely race this one years to come!
