![]() Swim
Comments: Poor swim I guess, though time was about what I expected and I finished MOP. Was relatively calm and didn't have much contact with other swimmers, but I was really nervous to start the race and never got into a rhythm. Water was shallow and most women were running much of the course. I wound up doing some of that too. The women stuck together in a very tight pack and there was very little difference in timing between places. The swim portion started and ended in waist deep water with a long run back to shore. This really tired me out when exiting to beach. What would you do differently?: Try to settle into a rhythm better, work on sighting more rather than rely on following the pack, swim more even in shallow water. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: T1 and T2 times included in bike portion of race. Felt like I did well here - stripped goggles, added shoes, race belt, sunglasses and helmet and was off pretty quickly. What would you do differently?: Take a drink before heading out. ![]() Bike
Comments: Really good bike. I had a strategy heading into the race that I would maintain 29 kph through most of the course and then slow a bit to catch my breath as I approached T2. All that went out the window. I wasn't really thinking throughout the race at all and messed the splits on my watch so I wasn't even checking total time. Having said that though, I was up over 29 kph for most of the course. I did take the corners pretty slow. What would you do differently?: Think more! Confidence to help corner faster. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Included with bike time. Good transition but I realized after the fact that I racked my bike a few spots too early. Not a big deal at this small informal race, but could be a dealbreaker later! What would you do differently?: Rack properly. ![]() Run
Comments: At this point I really felt like not only was I not going to break 45 minutes, but I wasn't even going to break 50. (I wasn't tracking splits etc. properly on my watch and wasn't sure whether the time it was reading was correct.) I was feeling pretty bad. My stomach was sloshing despite the fact I hadn't had a drink since the race started and really didn't drink any lake water either. Mentally I was in a bit of a down mood. I'd hoped to break 11 minutes but knew when running it wasn't going to happen. I did pick up a bit at the end when I saw the finish line. If I'd known it was as close as it was, I probably would have picked up sooner. My running fitness has probably suffered these past few months as I've worked on training the swim and bike (my original weaknesses) more. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Not much. Somehow missed the refreshments. However... I did find out I placed 2nd in age group... so we stuck around to collect my hardware. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Jitters at start of race and negative mindset at end of race. Totally mental limitations. Event comments: Don't have much to compare it to, but I think the course is great and the event was pretty well organized. I would definitely race here again. Got a late start when none of the 3 pumps would properly inflate my tires. Wound up stopping in at LBS at last minute for a fill. Got to the venue a little later than planned and road closures put us at the race area even later. One of the last to sign in. The good part was that I didn't have time to get any more nervous than I already was. Got a bad spot in transition and was glad to hear they altered the course to ensure it was the same length for everyone this year. I'd only eaten a bowl of cereal and some fruit for breakfast and 1/2 bagel for lunch. My nervous stomach wouldn't allow me to eat any more than that.
None. (a) No time. (b) Nobody else seemed to be warming up. (Or else they did it before I got there!) Probably shouldn't let that influence me, but I did notice it.
