Pre-race routine:

I had a bad cold 2 weeks before this race so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I was also dealing with a late season knee injury which I have been treating with rest, ice and Hammer Tissue Rejuvenator. Hoping it works.

Woke up at 5am, took a quick shower to wake up. Ate a bowl of cereal and a yogurt and a cup of coffee. Mixed water bottles, One with Heed and one with Perpetuem. Drove to Winslow Park with a friend. Showed up at 6am so plenty of time to relax and get transition area set up. Hung out in car to stay warm and then headed over to porta-potties around 8:15.

Put wetsuit on and headed over to start area. Debated whether to do a warm up swim. They usually help me, but didnt want to get cold standing around after the warm up (water was 60 degrees). Decided to go for quick swim. Glad I did.
Event warmup:

Swam for a few minutes to get use to the water and get the blood flowing.
Swim
  • 24m 48s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a wade start (I was 2nd wave) and had 3 min to walk single file into the water and get a good position. Didnt get to where I wanted to, but it worked out ok. I was a few rows back, but good line to first buoy. There was more bumping and thrashing than I expected once we got going. I tried to stay more to the outside to avoid it. Sighting was good to first buoy, but hard once I rounded the buoy as this was into the sun. Mostly followed the pack.

For the most part I felt pretty good. Had a little trouble with breathing and switched back and forth between lateral and bilateral. Also swallowed some salt water a few times. There seemed to be a lot of fast swimmers as well. I saw lots of orange caps in front of me and near me all the way to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Overall, I was happy with my swim. My goal was to be under 28 min and ended up at 24:48.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Was hoping there would be wetsuit strippers, but didnt see any. Wetsuit came off better this time though so it worked out. Race Belt and Helmet on, socks and shoes on, glasses on and off I go. I still dont do a running mount, but I dont think this really slows me down to much. Everyone I saw doing this, I seemed to pass in the first few hundred feet. Overall, not great, but better than before.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 51s
  • 24.7 miles
  • 21.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Hamstrings were very tight at the start. Was able to push through it and get up to a good pace quickly though. Since I started in the 2nd wave and had a fairly good swim, there weren't a lot of people to pass. I was passed by a few on tri bikes, but not many. I felt stronger near the end. Played cat and mouse with a few. I would usually pass on the climbs and get passed on the downhill.
What would you do differently?:

Overall, I was happy with my bike, especially since I am on a road bike. I may have been able to go a little faster, but would have hurt my run a lot more. Need to work more on increasing power while seated on climbs/rollers. I tend to stand more often. Maybe Santa will help me get a tri bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Much better this time. Ranked bike, took off helmet and bike shoes, put on running shoes and off I go. Grabbed Gel and put it in rear pocket in case I needed it (I didnt).
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Run
  • 51m 53s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Running is my weakest event and my biggest limiter. Legs were stiff off the bike and it took a while to get lose enough. The first hill right out of the gate didn't help either. Everyone I passed on the bike, quickly passed me on the run. It was a little discouraging. I also missed one of the turns and thankfully someone yelled at me to turn around. Never really felt great on the run though. Was excited when I saw the park ticket booth and thought I was close, but turns out I still had a ways to go. You run around the transition area and loop back to the finish line. I was really feeling it when I crossed the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

More running in the offseason. If I can cut 1 min off my pace, that could save over 6 min overall.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank water and the drink they handed out (I think it was cytomax, which I was not a big fan of). Then drank a Banana Muscle Milk. Not great either.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Having a cold for 2 weeks before the race. Knee injury. Not being a strong runner.

Event comments:

Overall it was a great race and couldn't beat the weather. I would like to do this one again next year.
