Run
Comments: Just over a year ago, I started the couch to 5K program. Never having ran before, just working through shin splints and aerobic conditioning, I did the 5K in sub 30:00, just barely, and left it all out there. This year I determined to do the 10K. I had run the distance a couple times (still dealing with shin splints through the last year), but at a slow LSD pace. My goal, unlikely as it was, was sub 1:00. Unthinkable just 12 months ago. Splits were: 10:08 - First mile is an obstacle course, worse than I remember last year. A 10:08 pace to start my race in the hole, so to speak, great. Almost came to a complete stop at a couple corners where everyone bunched up 19:49 - second mile in 9:41. Hey, that's not that much of an improvement, First two miles kept HR in the 160s. 29:49 - 10 minute mile. Dude, you are SO not getting this done. WTF? That's a decent 5K time for last year, but will not get you sub 1:00 here today. Time to pick it up 38:56 - Mile 4 was 9:07. All right, now we're talking. HR for miles 3-4 up into 170s. That's perfect. Mile 4 is where it started to hurt, even though we were passed the turnaround. I've got 21 minutes to go 2.2 miles....... HOWEVER...... There were a LOT of people walking. I may not make my goal, and I may not be fast, but I am not walking. That was my mantra: No Matter What, Keep Running. For the record, no three legged dogs beat me in this race :) ???? - Ummm, I can't remember this split, but I think 48:45, puts me at 9:49, all right since there were some hills and it hurt a little bit. There is one decent hill near the end of the mile, short but steep. During the run I had gone back and forth about my goal. Was almost resigned at mile 3 that I would not make it. Went back and forth, if I am not going to make it, back off? Or work as hard as I could and get as close as I could? I chose the latter. I knew the 6 mile marker was coming up. Trying to do calculations in my head, how fast do I need to go .2 miles? I figured if I hit it around 58 or less, I would sprint and make it. 58:12 - Mile 6, so I was close. I sprinted. Down to the bottom of the hill, turn left, turn right, 100 yards from the end, looked down and watch said 59:40. Hit the line and erased my time :^..... 59:50 is what I am setting it at. I know it was sub 1:00, just not how sub, but it doesn't matter. HR during last 2 miles was 180. Just looked at my 5K from last year, ran 9:37 there, and there was NO WAY i could have completed a 10K, a year later I did at the same pace. Pretty cool My MOST IMPORTANT RULE today was NOT TO WALK. I was running at the mile 4 mark, not sure I'd make an hour, and I saw a lot of people walking. But not me, even up the big hill at the end. Keep running, no matter what, keep running. That's what I did and damned if I wasn't pretty proud of myself for doing it. I may not be the fastest, but I am stubborn What would you do differently?: Not much. Train more, break 55 :) Post race
Warm down: stretch, sip of beer, water, too much walking back to the car which was parked too far...... What limited your ability to perform faster: weight, need more miles Event comments: Bummer - at the end, there was no food. For a recreational 10K to not have food for the hour and above finishers is ridiculous. Other than that, it's a fun race, beer garden afterwards, nice off season performance test.
